An award-winning resort community, Sun Peaks offers a wide range of events, activities and amenities, making it a premiere year-round alpine destination.
Though Sun Peaks—located just 45 minutes north of Kamloops—is famous for its “easy-to-ski” powder, the resort has just as much to offer during the warmer off-season. In fact, as temperatures rise, so do the number of unique activities—making it the perfect weekend destination for city dwellers during the summer.
Get in on this year’s festival circuit with Sun Peak’s fourth annual Summer Concert Series. The free event will see the resort play host to a roster of both regional and internationally recognized talent, including local country boys the Chris Buck Band, and six-time Juno award winner, Colin James.
The series kicks off this July 3 and 4, where legendary American rock vocalist and songwriter Lou Gramm, and Canadian 80’s icons, Platinum Blonde, will take to the outdoor stage for a weekend of non-stop entertainment.
Give your feet a break—and cover twice as much ground—with a fun off-road Segway experience. Guests will first learn to ride the unique mode of transport (it’s all about balance!) before taking on a number of dirt trails, leading to picturesque views of the village from above.
Tours are available daily throughout the summer and begin at $55 for a one-hour session.
If you prefer to do your sightseeing by foot, then hiking through Sun Peaks’ scenic summits is a must. Choose from 16 designated hiking trails—some beginning from the village and others, a cool 6,000 feet above via the chairlift—and explore the blossoming grounds that are home to vibrant Indian Paintbrush, Tiger Lilies, Fireweed and more.
Guided hiking tours are also available throughout the summer, where guests can learn more about the area’s different peaks, mountain ranges and wildlife.
Ever wondered what it’s like to walk on water? Stand-up paddle boarding is as close as it gets—until science catches up, anyway. Learn how to master the sport along the waters of beautiful Heffley Lake as you soak up the area’s serene surroundings.
If you’re a more experienced boarder (or looking to build on your new skills), Sun Peaks also offers stand-up paddle boarding lake tours, advanced lessons and SurFit and Yoga. It doesn’t get any more West Coast than this.
Adrenaline junkies won’t be able to turn down a run on Sun Peak’s Mountain Cross Cart course—the first of its kind in North America. Race down the 512-metre track at speeds of up to 35 km/hour, as it winds its way through the resort’s rugged elevations.
Each run is also timed, so you can challenge yourself to beat the clock or spark some healthy competition between friends or family.
Located 1,200 metres above sea level, the Graham Cooke golf course at Sun Peaks is B.C.’s highest elevation course. Spend an afternoon hitting the green as you take in the natural beauty and magnificent views of the surrounding Tod, Sundance and Morrisey mountains.
Bonus: the higher the elevation, the longer your ball flies, so whether you’re a beginner or golfing veteran, your game should only improve on the 6,400 yard links-style course.
Wind down on a patio at one of the village’s 20-plus restaurants and cafés, each of which boasts an impressive number of homegrown wines. An unparalleled sunset view and live music most evenings will also ensure the end to each day will be a memorable one.
For the first time this summer, wine samplings from two different wineries in neighbouring Kamloops will also be available every Sunday at the Sun Peaks Farmers’ Market.
