Kanye West is melting down like never before. So why isn't he being placed under a Britney Spears-style conservatorship?
Kanye West is all over the media these days. Not only is he the subject of a new three-part Netflix documentary, the 20-years-in-the-making jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, he’s also been in the midst of a full-blown meltdown on social media due to his divorce from Kim Kardashian and her new romance with SNL star Pete Davidson.
Attacking Davidson—or, in Kanye-ese, Skete—with threats and insults, sharing private texts from his soon-to-be ex-wife and other unhinged behaviour, it’s clear that the billionaire rapper is once again on the edge, with nobody in his inner circle capable of getting him to rein it in. And much like West’s previous shenanigans—say, his misogynistic attacks on Taylor Swift and his ridiculous presidential campaign—his latest is unlikely to end well.
With that in mind, let’s cast back to 2007, when Britney Spears shaved her head in front of the paparazzi and wound up having every aspect of her life controlled via a conservatorship that lasted for 13 years. If West did that, it wouldn’t even register in the top 100 most outrageous things he’s done this week.
Which begs the question: why isn’t anyone stepping in to take care of West’s affairs—for his own good, as Spears was told—while he’s so clearly struggling right now?
I think we all know the reason why that is, and how different the outcome would no doubt be if it were Kardashian exhibiting that kind of unhinged behaviour instead.
