How to create a festive hygge home for under $60
Just like decor in general, Christmas decorating trends go in and out every few years. Sure, you can spend $30 on a special ornament you’ll treasure forever, or invest in a perfectly sparse Scandi-inspired tree (such a hot trend right now), but if you want to keep your home looking festive and fresh without breaking the bank, we’ve got tips on how you can decorate on a dime.
Budget-friendly IKEA offers up some trendy yet timeless options to make your home merry and bright this season. Here are some of our favourites…
This gorgeous garland makes it super easy to incorporate a festive feel into your home. Literally throw it over a doorway, fireplace hearth, or on the table, and you’ve instantly added holiday charm. The artificial boxwood is suitable for indoor and outdoor use and measures two metres long (so you might want to grab a few). Unlike real tree garlands, this one won’t make a mess and it can be used for years. Intertwine some fairy lights (about 1.5 to 2 times the length of the garland) for a twinkly touch.
We’re kind of obsessed with this one. The Stråla candleholder with its modern curves in brushed brass will add a contemporary feel to your home. This is an especially great piece for those with young children or pets, as you won’t have to worry about any open flames or dripping wax. Stråla is battery-operated (aka completely cordless) and features an LED bulb that you just screw off and on. When lit, this cheap and cheerful piece will add a cozy and warm glow to any room. Can you say “hygge”?
A must-have for the busy holiday season to safely transport everything from gifts to food to booze, the Vinterfint storage bag comes in a bold red-and-white floral pattern and measures a spacious 35 x 73 x 30 centimetres. It can also be used to stash gifts out of sight (and away from curious eyes), as it shuts completely with its top zipper closure. The best part? Once emptied, it folds up totally flat so it can be easily stored away (I mean, who knows more about flatpacking than IKEA?).
Whether it’s a sparkly tree, candlelight or a lantern, you can never have enough illumination in your home over the holidays. This cute little LED lantern is battery operated and even features a timer, which shuts it off after six hours. Stråla can be hung from its top loop, incorporated into your tablescape, or placed on any piece of furniture in any room you’d like. With the sun setting at around 4 p.m. these days, you’ll be glad you added this warm and inviting indoor accent.
A Christmas tree is not a Christmas tree without balls—and this affordable multi-coloured set of 16 is an absolute holiday essential. The playful colours will brighten your space, and the glass spheres will reflect light throughout your home. Because this set features such a wide assortment of colours, it will complement any ornaments you have already collected over the years.
Stock up on wrapping now so you’re not stressing on Christmas Eve. IKEA offers a wide selection of gift bags for everyone on your list. We love this selection of colours and patterns in the Vinterfint set. These bags can be used year after year, so you may want to gift them within your household—then you’ll be ready to go for Christmas 2023.
