10 Nourishing Hair Masks and Oils for Dry Winter Days
Dry skin is extremely common when the winter weather sets in. If your skin feels like it needs some love this season, we're here to help
If your skin feels like it needs some love this season, you aren’t alone. Thankfully, a bit of extra TLC is all it takes to give your skin the moisture and rejuvenation necessary to tackle colder temperatures.
“Dryness is the result of a damaged moisture barrier and can present as reddened, flaky, itchy or cracked skin. It can certainly be uncomfortable,” says Dawn Reynolds, Phace Medical Aesthetics & Skincare’s founder and a certified medical aesthetician with almost two decades in the medical health and wellness field.
“For starters, the outside humidity is lower, but cold temperatures usually mean that we’re spending more time inside, exposed to forced air and heat,” says Reynolds, “This also decreases humidity indoors, drying out our skin.”
As a result, the natural oils in our skin decrease. Combine that with exfoliating (sometimes too much!) to get rid of dry unwanted skin, using water that’s too hot, and overdoing your skincare routine to try and fix it, and your skin starts to feel dry.
Everyone’s skin is different, and choosing the right facial treatment for your skin can be a bit overwhelming, so don’t hesitate to speak to a skincare expert; they’ll be able to observe your skin and recommend the right treatment for you.
Here are five treatments perfect for hydrating your skin in the wintertime…
Face peels—chemical or natural—can give your face the fresh start it needs. These peels involve removing the dry and troublesome outer layer, giving way for healthier skin to take its place. “For this treatment, there’s a little bit of downtime involved, so plan to rest for a day or two afterwards to let it work its magic,” says Reynolds.
“Microdermabrasion is absolutely amazing for our dry winter skin,” says Reynolds. “It’s another form of exfoliation that targets the top layer of skin—removing whatever is dry, old and tired—making it easier for your serums and moisturizers to penetrate the skin and do their thing. Wait and see how smooth your skin is after this treatment!”
“Microneedling is one of my favourite ways to treat dry skin, because it produces long-lasting results,” says Reynolds, “It works by helping to rejuvenate and remodel the outer layer of skin by triggering something we call a healing cascade. New collagen and elastin production helps to replace dead, dry skin cells with new and fresh skin cells, resulting in a smooth, hydrated and glowing result.”
You might have heard of dermaplaning before. This popular treatment leads to deep exfoliation and skin rejuvenation, utilizing a small surgical blade to gently remove the top layers of dry skin cells. Similar to microdermabrasion, the end result is smooth and soft skin, free of rough patches and dryness.
DMK enzyme treatments aren’t only different and fun, they pack a punch. “If you’re looking to correct dry skin, this is a great treatment to consider,”says Reynolds. “These enzymes don’t just work on the surface of the skin, they work at a cellular level to treat the root cause. Enzymes help to restore the health and natural functioning of your skin so it can perform as you need it to.”
There you have it! Some consider facials to be a luxury and while that may be true, there’s definitely more to it. Reynolds notes that facial treatments like these are an opportunity to get a nice deep clean, some professional exfoliation and extra hydration to keep your skin protected in the long-run.
“Our skin is our body’s largest organ, so getting regular facials is just taking good care of ourselves,” says Reynolds, “Regular advanced or medical grade facials help to maintain optimal skin health and keep it in tip top shape. Take care of your skin, and it will take care of you for years to come!”
