Grapevine wreaths are easy to make and can be used as a year-round rustic accent for gates, doors or walls

Fall is the ideal time to make your grapevine wreath, while the vines are still pliable. Follow these simple instructions.

1. Find a Fine Vine

The most challenging part of making grapevine wreaths is finding suitable grapevines. If you don’t happen to own your own vineyard, ask a generous neighbour or friend to save you their vines when they prune. Longer vines will work the best, but shorter vines can be used as well.

2. Shape the Vine into the Ideal Size and Shape

Starting from the thickest part of the vine, shape the vine into a circular shape. Thick vines will not bend easily, resulting in a wreath with a wider diameter, while thin vines can be used to make much smaller wreaths. Secure the wreath with garden wire while it dries.

3. Wrap the Vine Around the Wreath

Once you have secured the basic wreath, start to wrap the remaining vine loosely around the circle you have formed. Wrap any of the smaller vines coming off the main vine around the wreath, and also add in any of the shorter vines you have left over. As you are working, try to shape the wreath so that it is as round as possible — this may be difficult if you are using thick or dry vines.

4. Dry and Hang

Hang the wreath to dry, or if hanging distorts the shape, dry on a flat surface. You can remove all the grape leaves or can leave them on the wreath to dry. Do not remove the curled vine ends, as they add interest.

Before hanging, remove the garden wire as well as any rogue vines that protrude in the wrong direction. You can hang your wreath as is, or can embellish it with seasonal ribbon, flowers, berries or leaves.
