This summer tradition is back, offering up another season of fun and full bellies. But what exactly is worth your money and how much does it cost?
It’s that time of year again—when everyone’s Instagram feed is filled with Richmond Night Market food pics. But what exactly is worth your money and how much does it cost? We went out with $75 to explore the stalls and find out exactly how much you can eat on a budget.
Here’s a guide to tasting your way through the Richmond Night Market in 2023…
Starting off with hot and savoury foods, this vendor boasts 30-cm (or 12-inch) chicken skewers, with flavours like Yang-Nyeom (sweet and spicy), Hot Spicy, Volcano Bomb and K-Garbi (Korean BBQ sauce). For those of you like myself who can’t handle the tiniest bit of spice, the K-Garbi flavour is the best bet. Extra condiments such as honey mustard, onion mayo and wasabi mayo are available for patrons to add as they please.
Next, we hit up Burggerist and according to the owners, the egg burger is a popular street-food item in China. This dish is made with an egg cooked into the bun and your choice of toppings inside. The signature Fresh Pork Egg Burger has interesting flavours and the texture is unlike any burger I’ve tried before. Other options include Special Roast Duck, Cheesy Corn and Tuna, and Black Pepper Grilled Beef (prices vary). It’s worth a visit if you’re an adventurous eater!
Not only is Taco Nori a staple at Richmond Night Market, they also operate food trucks around Metro Vancouver. Their sushi tacos feature cold sashimi on a bed of warm rice inside a crispy seaweed shell and fried to perfection—basically, it’s a harmonious blend of a bunch of delicious ingredients. Prices vary depending on the flavour you choose, and some options include Tuna, California Style, Mango Paradise, and Chopped Scallop.
A scoop of vanilla ice cream surrounded by four pieces of warm French toast, each stuffed with chewy mochi, a dollop of filling and drizzled with condensed milk. Need I say more?! If you have a sweet tooth, this vendor is a great option. The warmth from the freshly fried Hong Kong-style French toast works perfectly with the cold ice cream. Patrons can choose from four different flavours: matcha, Nutella, taro or kaya coconut ($15). If you want them all, get the flight for $17.
This food stall only sells mango sticky rice, but that’s all they need to attract a herd of visitors! Their mango sticky rice comes in three sizes: medium, large and extra large. A medium order comes with half a sliced mango next to a ball of warm sticky rice, drizzled with coconut milk and topped with coconut cream. The sticky rice balances out the sweetness from the mango, and the sensation of cold fruit with warm rice in your mouth is something you need to experience for yourself.
Longtime patrons of the Richmond Night Market will recognize this juice stall. It’s been with the market for many years, and only carries two menu items each year. This time around, they’re offering sugar cane juice and sugar cane lime soda. The sugar cane juice is refreshing and not overly sweet, so it’s great for cleansing your palate after greasy or sweet foods. Sometimes simple is best!
Richmond Night Market runs every weekend from now until October 9. Entry costs $8 per person, or $35 for five entries with an express entry zoom pass.
