From summer festivals to art exhibitions and more, here’s what to add to your calendar this month

1. Early Music Vancouver: BACH UNTAMED Summer Festival – Tuesday, July 30 to Thursday, August 8

Welcome summer by blessing your eardrums with Early Music Vancouver’s beautiful renditions of the Bach masterpieces. This summer festival will weave music practices from India and the Middle East into the innovative arrangements of Bach classics. You can expect a rich ensemble of nearly 50 participating early music artists from Canada and international stages. The highlight this summer season will be the rarely-performed Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610, which will include Cree-Métis Two-Spirit baritone Jonathon Adams, renowned tenor Charles Daniels, Czech soprano Hana Blažikova and cornetto virtuoso Bruce Dickey, led by the Pacific Baroque Orchestra’s director Alexander Weimann. 2. The Improv Centre: Unhinged with Kevin McDonald – Saturday, August 24

Canadian actor, voice actor and comedian Kevin McDonald will be bringing a night of laughter to audiences this month. He will be opening his show by performing inspiring solo stand-up sets, and will be joined by The Improv Centre’s ensemble during the second half of the show. In addition to the comedy show, Kevin will also be hosting two workshops at TIC this month. For the improv fanatics, more information on the workshops can be found here and here.

3. Oakridge Park x Pac Rim Patio: Picnic in the Park – Now until Thursday, September 5

Enjoy an afternoon in the sun while sipping on refreshing summer drinks on a pop-up patio this summer season! The ‘Picnic in the Park’ experience offers bright floral decor throughout the patio and features daily, curated live-music performances. Perfect for the foodies and Instagram-ers who enjoy photo ops, this Fairmont Pacific Rim Patio collaboration with Oakridge Park makes for a refreshing way to spend a warm afternoon. You’ll get to enjoy a picnic basket menu for two, with carefully curated offerings like a variety of savoury sandwiches, house-made pasta salad, fresh red pepper dip, crudité and freshly baked cookies. This pop-up is available Wednesdays to Sundays, from 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sway to the tunes of local musicians as you sip your bubbly – cheers!

4. Pride Kickoff Party – Thursday, August 1

Celebrate love in all forms at the Gastown Pride Kickoff Party. Explore festivities along the rainbow brick road and show up to support your community and/or allies. Vancouver’s most talented LGBTQ2S+ artists will perform on the pop-up outdoor stage from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. that evening. Some headliners you can expect include multidisciplinary artist and singer TIKA and Bluee Joy Drag Show, featuring an all-Asian cast. Stop by and be awed by the love that fills the stage.

5. Bard Explored – Saturday, August 10 and Saturday, August 17

Take part in an invigorating conversation about Shakespeare’s works with SFU’s Paul Budra. The two plays featured in Bard Explored talks this month will delve into the world of The Comedy of Errors and Measure for Measure, exploring ideas, inspirations and influences behind the play’s storyline. Each talk begins at 11 a.m. and runs for about one hour, including a question-and-answer segment. Have any questions about the plays that you’re itching to discuss? Now’s your chance!

6. Anti-Icon: APOKALYPSIS – Now until Sunday, September 29

Explore social constructs throughout history as reflected in The Polygon Gallery’s newest exhibition. Internationally acclaimed artist Martine Gutierrez is setting up shop in Vancouver, where she is displaying all 17 of her self-portraits in a coherent fashion for the first time ever. In these self-portraits, Martine transforms herself into feminist icons from history and myth, in an attempt to stretch the limitations of the self and of the social imagination that shapes it. Take a leap into Martine’s creativity and depth of mind in this exhibition!

7. Dinosaur Roar of BC – Thursday, August 1, Thursday, August 15 and Thursday, August 29

Calling all kiddos and their parents (yes, you’re invited too)! The Okanagan Heritage Museum is presenting an opportunity for children to explore all things dinosaurs. The museum uses real palaeontology equipment and fossil exploration to reimagine a land filled with these extinct animals. A dinosaur tour will also be available for all, where a guide will educate audiences about the scope of dinosaurs.

8. NESTFEST – Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4

The third annual NESTFEST is back for another summer filled with pints of craft beer, live music and community! This two-day bender is being hosted over the BC Day long weekend, where you can party all-weekend-long or just join for one of the days. Some music headliners include Juno-nominated Ruby Waters, Dear Rouge and Juno Award-winning Sam Roberts Band.
