Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk! The Three Stooges hits DVD this week
A new generation of Three Stooges hits DVD
The Farrelly Brothers (There’s Something About Mary) risk eternal damnation as they recast the legendary slapstick trio (with Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes as Larry; MadTV’s Will Sasso as Curly and Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe) and create an entirely new comedy around them involving the boys getting caught up in a murder plot (concerning Sophia Vergara from Modern Family) and starring in their own reality show. Then again, you may want to see this just because Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Larry David co-stars as a Catholic nun. EXTRAS include deleted scenes, a history of the original Three Stooges and much more. (Fox)
In this Luc Besson-penned sci-fi action film (which is reminiscent of Escape from New York), a wrongly convicted man (Guy Pearce) is offered his freedom if he can rescue the President’s daughter (Maggie Grace) from a prison in space where the inmates have taken over. (Alliance)
Based on the novel by Paul Torday, Ewan McGregor stars as fishing scientist who is asked by a wealthy sheikh to bring salmon fishing to the Highlands of Yemen in order to change their economic and spiritual climate and in turn finds romance with the man’s advisor (Emily Blunt). (Sony)
Everyone in a pair of single friends’ (Jennifer Westfeldt and Adam Scott) lives has begun having children, leaving them out of the loop. But they are mature adults who platonically decide to have a child together while continuing their separate dating lives. (Lionsgate)
Elizabeth Olsen stars in this North American remake of the spooky Spanish chiller about a young woman and her father who spend the night in a seemingly haunted house. This is remarkable for the fact that is shot in “real time” from their arrival onwards and does pack a suspenseful punch. (eOne)
Mel Gibson stars in this unusual and surprisingly entertaining action film as a thief who is caught and arrested at the border to Mexico and locked up in a city-like prison which seems to run by its own rules. When he befriends a young boy, who is there with his mother, he soon learns that the boy is being kept there as an organ donor for an elderly criminal and makes it his life’s work to get the boy out alive. (Fox/Alliance)
Will Ferrell and Diego Luna star in this Spanish-language comedy as brothers who are torn over the love of a woman (Genesis Rodriquez) as they try and save their failing family ranch from an evil drug lord called Orza (Gael Garcia Bernal). (Lionsgate)
A young man with a rare disorder is forced to drink blood to survive. After years of living alone, he falls for a bartender and becomes the prime suspect in a series of murders. (Image)
A book editor who is in possession of a prophetic artifact teams up with an archeologist after receiving visions of the end of the world in this locally-shot sci-fi thriller. (Anchor Bay)
CLASSIC RE-RELEASES
This 1952 musical classic about the early days of Hollywood – starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor – gets the ultimate treatment in this 3-disc anniversary edition. Not only do you get the film in both DVD and Blu-ray, you get an entire disc of EXTRAS including audio commentary from surviving cast members and others; the feature-length documentary Musicals Great Musicals: The Arthur Freed Unit at MGM; musical scenes from the original films from which the songs in Singing in the Rain came from; and much more. Along with the film, this set comes with a collectible umbrella, reproductions of the original posters, a 48-page book and more. (Warner)
Michael Douglas and Genevieve Bujold star in this entertaining 1978 thriller (based on the book by Robin Cook and directed by Michael Crichton) as young medical students who uncover a deadly conspiracy within their hospital. (Warner)
TV ON DVD
Available in two separate volumes, the third season of this popular long-running Western series which starred Lorne Green and Michael Landon contains all 34 episodes and features an array of great guest stars including Lee Marvin, James Coburn, John Carradine as well as Star Trek’s DeForest Kelly and James Doohan. What other reasons do you need to return to the Ponderosa? (CBS/ Paramount)
This fourth and final season finds Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and her team “going rogue” as they find that their former allies have turned against them in this Canadian sci-fi hit series. This 4-disc set contains all 13 episodes. (eOne)
Dave Foley, Curtis Armstrong and Paget Brewster lend their voices to this animated series about an angry guy named Dan who seems to have a problem with a number of things in the world including dentists, ninjas, dinner theatre and Canada. All 22 episodes are now available on 3-discs. (Anchor Bay)
