The AK design team uses a modern-traditional aesthetic and natural materials to create a truly beautiful space.
When tasked with designing this beautiful family home in Vancouver, the goal for the AK Design team was to create a space that felt bright, sophisticated and had a timeless quality.
Being a brand new build, the project offered the perfect canvas for interior designer Annaliesse Kelly to craft a West Coast dream home for the clients.
“We wanted to design a home that went beyond trends, one that could grow with their family,” says Kelly.
This fresh, modern-traditional aesthetic is present throughout the home, particularly in the materials and accents. Kelly and the AK team are big fans of layering: filling a room with a variety of design elements that look cohesive and effortless.
The kitchen is full of thoughtful design elements and layers that make it feel warm, inviting and perfect for family gatherings.Among these thoughtful touches is the solid white oak wood used on the kitchen island. It’s the real deal, and there’s no veneer used.
Painted cabinets brighten the space, while brass fixtures add a touch of sparkle. The leather, black-painted metal bar chairs are the perfect blend of modern and traditional and feel right at home with the quartz countertop.
As you tour the rest of the home, you’ll find plenty more examples of putting a modern twist on traditional design elements. In the powder room, a beautiful Harewood Avington wallpaper—courtesy of Maxwell Fabrics—is instantly chic and whimsical, yet feels classic and timeless.
One of the bathrooms has a cozy spa-inspired feel, courtesy of stylish patterned Ames Tile by Memory Series. There’s layering and textures to be found here too, thanks to the glimmering drawer handles by Park Studio.
Contemporary greys and neutrals are here to stay. In the laundry room, serene cabinets in Wedgewood Grey by Benjamin Moore make this active, crucial space feel airy and inviting. Overall, the home truly feels like a West Coast oasis, combining timeless design features with fresh innovations for this young family to experience. This story was originally published in October 2022.
