This is the delightful herb garden just outside the gift shop at Hazelwood Herb Farm, in Cedar on Vancouver Island. Being Mediterranean plants many herbs love free drainage and the heat reflected off gravel pathways.
An herb border like this works very well for edible landscaping a front yard in full sun. There is a constant drift of fragrance and colour from such a garden as herbs develop their aromatic properties.
My friends Richard and Jacynthe have been growing culinary, medicinal and medieval herbs at Hazelwood Herb Farm for many years. These mauve flowering garlic chives, which bloom in July and August, are one of my favourite purchases from their offerings under the lathe walk. The gift shop inspires and overflows with wonderful healing herbal products that Jacynthe makes from the garden.
