If conditioned gradually, your bird of paradise (Strelitzia reginae) can be left outdoors during the summer. This plant enjoys plenty of sun, so long as it doesn’t get sunburned.

Water and fertilize as needed, following the fertilizer label for suggested application rates.

By fall, start acclimatizing the plant to be brought indoors. Reduce watering and feeding as winter approaches. Your bird of paradise will also enjoy a slightly cooler temperature (12°C/54°F) at this time of year.

Plants can take up to four to six years before being mature enough to flower, but they can also be slightly rootbound to encourage blooms.
