8 Kid-Friendly Hikes Around the Lower Mainland

Spend the rest of the kiddos’ summer break outdoors hiking these trails only a short drive from Vancouver

Prime hiking weather has dawned on us—not too hot, not too cold. Enjoy the rest of summer and help the little ones reconnect with nature on these eight kid-friendly hikes driving distance from Vancouver. 

1. Rice Lake

Location: North Vancouver
Hike distance (round trip): 3 km

This flat gravel path hike is great for young children. With minimal elevation, they can walk for longer before feeling tired. Parents can bring strollers on this hike (yes—it is stroller accessible) for when the kids get tired or to help even the littlest ones get outdoors. Plus, adults can still enjoy the scenic trail while the kids are napping in the stroller. Children can also fish off the dock or explore side trails along the lake.

2. Reifel Bird Sanctuary

Location: Delta
Hike distance (round trip): 5 km

For kids interested in wildlife, the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a fun spot with plenty to see along the way. Take your pick from the various routes available, and watch children’s eyes light up when they spot a cool-looking bird. There are also observation towers and birdseed available for purchase, making this a great opportunity for kids to interact with nature.

3. Sasamat Lake Loop

Location: Port Moody
Hike distance (round trip): 3.2 km

Enjoy a gentle walk around Sasamat Lake with boardwalks, a floating bridge and mountain views. Since this trail wraps around the lake, you can choose exactly where to start. Go out for a morning walk and take a break for a lunchtime picnic with scenic views.

4. Bridal Veil Falls

Location: Chilliwack
Hike distance (round trip): 0.8 km

This short and flat trail ends at a beautiful, veil-like waterfall. For parents who want quick outdoor time, this is a great option for you. 

5. Shoreline Trail

Location: Port Moody
Hike distance (round trip): 6 km

This flat trail is located inside the Rocky Point Park, and wraps around the Burrard Inlet. Not only is this park scenic with ocean views, there are also two playgrounds along the trail. The best way to end the hike is to grab a sweet treat at nearby a ice cream parlour after…it’s like a reward!

6. Twin Falls

Location: North Vancouver
Hike distance (round trip): 1.5 km 

Ideal for parents with older kids who want just a tad of a challenge, this hike is for you. Cross the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge on this hike, then follow a one-hour loop through the forest to the Twin Falls. There are boardwalk sections throughout the trail that make the experience enjoyable for beginner hikers.

7. Dorman Point

Location: Bowen Island
Hike distance (round trip): 2.5 km

This trail is located in Crippen Regional Park on Bowen Island. Head over by ferry and make a weekend getaway out of the scenic hike. This trail is only a short walk from the Snug Cove ferry terminal, and offers sweeping views of Howe Sound

8. Kanaka Creek Cliff Falls

Location: Maple Ridge
Hike distance (round trip): 4 km

This easy and mostly flat destination brings you along the Fraser River. With several sets of trails available, you can pick exactly which one to embark on. The forested trails have minimal elevation and offer the opportunity to explore while listening to the sounds of Kanaka Creek.
