B.C. Family Day hits on February 10 this year. Not sure what you and the family should do? We’ve got you covered! Check out these 10 family-friendly events happening throughout the Lower Mainland for some guaranteed fun good old-fashioned bonding.
Spend the long weekend at Whistler and enjoy 50 per cent off on lift tickets when booked with accommodation. The Stay & Ski package also allows kids to stay overnight and rent equipment for free with each paying adult. Gear up and head out for some quality time on the slopes.
Start your Family Day off early with a family-oriented interactive program at the Vancouver Art Gallery. These weekly programs are aimed at families and are free to children 12 years and younger with the purchase of a regular adult gallery admission. Have fun in the hands-on “Making Place”, designed to let kids design their own art projects.
The Burnaby Village Museum is hosting a special Family Day Event at their carousel from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on February 10. Children can enjoy kid-friendly entertainers, arts and crafts, heritage games and unlimited carousel rides. Full details online.
Add some laughter to your Family Day by taking in Align Entertainment’s production of SHREK the Musical. See Shrek, Donkey and Fiona come to life on stage in this musical theatre production. Shows run throughout February and are available to purchase online.
Inspire the next generation of athletes with a visit to the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame. Learn about hometown heroes like Terry Fox, Percy Williams and Trevor Linden and have fun playing with interactive exhibits and games. Be sure to get 50% off admission when you buy tickets online, or wear red mittens in celebration of the 2010 Winter Games and get half off too.
Cypress Mountain is also getting in on the Family Day action. With 50 per cent off children’s lift, trail and tubbing tickets all weekend, you won’t lack for things to do. Off the slopes there are carousel rides, colouring contests, live entertainment, a visit from Gnarly the Bear (he’s much cuter than he sounds) and a fireworks celebration.
A Vancouver favourite, the Robson Square skating rink is the perfect way to be active and have fun on Familly Day. The rink closes February 28, so take advantage of the last few weeks of open ice before its too late. Admission is free and skates are available to rent on-site.
Spend the night at the Vancouver Aquarium and wake up celebrating Family Day next to a beluga whale. On February 9, the aquarium plays host to a family-themed sleepover that features special activities, presentations about aquatic life and a behind-the-scenes tour of a marine lab. The Fraser River Discovery Centre partners up with the city of New Westminster to offer a free Family Day event. Highlights include live music, magic shows, face painting and the chance to pan for gold – awesome! The festivities will take place on the banks of the Fraser River, giving you and your family the perfect opportunity to learn more about this legendary resource.
All weekend long the town of Sidney, B.C., will be hosting a Lego Event sponsored by the Sidney Museum’s Lego exhibit. Take part in a town-wide scavenger hunt, help Lego professional Robin Sather build a massive Lego fire truck and get involved in ongoing family activities.
