Le Dîner en Blanc is served once again

After a two-year COVID hiatus, Le Dîner en Blanc returned to Vancouver on Thursday, August 18th at Jack Poole Plaza in Coal Harbour—right where it started 10 years ago.

I was definitely feeling nostalgic all evening and couldn’t help but remember when Jordan Kallman and Tyson Villeneuve of The Social Concierge—the organizers and founders of Le Dîner en Blanc in Vancouver—were newbies to the interview game. I loved chatting with them then and even more now.

“This year’s Le Dîner en Blanc Vancouver was especially close to our hearts,” said Kallman. “Bringing back the sense of camaraderie, community dining, music, the arts, and, frankly, fun was very important to us. The moment the sparklers were lit and everyone was dancing was just indescribable. It was a long two-year wait and we were so happy to be able to bring the event back.”Christine McAvoyWhat was once a “friends- and word-of-mouth-only” event has grown into an international sensation celebrated on six continents. Launched in Paris in 1988 by François Pasquier and a handful of friends, Le Dîner en Blanc de Paris marked its 30th anniversary in 2018 with a record 17,000 guests from Paris and around the world. The iconic dinner still carries on a set of traditions and rules that must be followed: you have to wear white and you must bring a table, chairs and a tablecloth (all white, of course).

Over its 10-year run, past venues for Le Dîner en Blanc Vancouver have included David Lam Park, Concord Pacific Plaza, Canada Place and VanDusen Botanical Gardens, all lovely, well-chosen spots around the city. 

Once the secret location was revealed a sea of white congregated at the outdoor picnic area. Themed blanc attire, picturesque views of the harbour and cocktails were in abundance. All-white outfits ranged from visually striking to theatrical and everything in between. The fashion is always a sight to see and so inspiring.

Some of my favourite moments of the evening were the iconic napkin wave, the lighting of the sparklers, and all the magic that ensues.Christine McAvoyIt’s not clear what the future holds for Le Dîner en Blanc in Vancouver, but I’ll tell you this—the 2022 event was one to remember!
