The turbulent relationship of country music icons George Jones and Tammy Wynette comes to life on the small screen
As individual country music artists, George Jones and Tammy Wynette each racked up a respective string of hits, epitomized by Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man.” While the music they made, both individually and together, remains iconic, it’s their tumultuous, volatile love story that has become the stuff of Nashville legend, forming the basis for Showtime’s limited series George & Tammy. CraveStarring Michael Shannon as Jones and Jessica Chastain as Wynette, this six-part drama chronicles the complicated but enduring romance of the country music power couple.
In addition to Shannon and Chastain, the series also features: Steve Zahn (The White Lotus) as George Richey, Wynette’s final husband and manager; Kelly McCormack (A League of Their Own) as Sheila Richey, George Richey’s former wife and Wynette’s one-time confidante; Walton Goggins (Justified) as Earl “Peanutt” Montgomery, a songwriter and collaborator of Jones; Pat Healy (Station 19) as Don Chapel, Wynette’s second husband and collaborator; David Wilson Barnes (Perry Mason) as record producer and songwriter Billy Sherrill; and Katy Mixon (American Housewife) as Jan Smith, a makeup and hair artist who becomes one of Wynette’s closest friends. Crave“Jessica and Michael are truly extraordinary as Tammy and George, and their searing performances and undeniable chemistry bring to life the legendary relationship of the king and queen of country music,” said Chris McCarthy, president/CEO, Showtime and Paramount Media Networks, in a statement. “The creators and the entire cast have delivered a series with the subtlety, nuance and complexity that are the hallmarks of the Showtime brand and what our viewers deserve and demand.” CraveGeorge & Tammy premieres Sunday, December 4 on Crave1
