There’s still plenty of summer to enjoy across the province, and with that comes a variety of fascinating cultures and artists that make up BC with events and festivals planned. Be sure and check out our listing below and fill up your calendars for the remainder of August.
Afro Caribbean Culture Summerfest of Surrey , called ACCESS’2024 takes place at Surrey Civic Plaza on August 24 and 25 with a mission to applaud diversity, make room for cultural understanding, and bring us all together with a common goal of inclusion. Performances of all kinds are taking place, plus interactive workshops, and conversation make for a couple days of fun and culture. Now in its third year, this festival is jointly organized by New Vision Music Society attracting 10,000 participants.
qathet Studio Tour happens August 24 and 25 in the qathet region (British Columbia Tla’amin Nation land near Powell River and Lund). Since 2004 this popular summer event welcomes hundreds of visitors into local artist’s homes and studios to witness creativity in the making. This free self-guided event here in BC showcases the diversity and excellence of the art community in qathet; just follow the turquoise road signs leading you through the stops to make and artists to discover. Pottery, painting, an opportunity to chat with the artists, and so much more.
Light Up Chinatown! Celebrates the deep heritage and diverse history of Vancouver’s own (and yes iconic) Chinatown. Produced by the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation, every year, this festival features live entertainment, special food collaborations, and a wide variety of interesting merchants set up in the 500-block of Columbia Street and neighbouring streets, spreading out to 16 blocks of Vancouver’s Chinatown. All are welcome to support one of Canada’s best known historic Asian neighbourhoods, discover what’s new and honour historic traditions in the Chinese community.
Nikkei Matsuri Japanese Festival takes place in Burnaby, and this festival focuses on Japanese culture, art, music, and food. This year catch it August 31 and September 1 and remember this is a fundraiser for cultural programming at the Nikken National Museum and Cultural Centre, so any support is much appreciated. Celebrate Japanese culture in Burnaby, kicking off with a parade, Japanese drumming, pop groups, traditional dance, Samurai and other martial arts demonstrations.
On the Labour Day long weekend check out TAIWANfest Vancouver, an annual event that showcases Taiwanese culture. Running August 31 to September 2, this year’s theme is called “Becoming Me” and explores Taiwan’s relationship with Spain regarding de/colonization, cultural exchange, national identity, and language. Expect to find an interesting mix of live performances, exhibitions, food vendors and family-focused fun. Watch for their set up near the Vancouver Art Gallery, and check out online for a complete, and jam-packed with fun, festival schedule.
Arts & Words Festival takes place on August 22-25 at Gibsons Public Market, where artists and authors are paired to create works of literature and art combined. New this year, a book and art fair will take place in the market, where those participating will sell their artwork and writings. Now in its third year, this festival now offers longer hours, plus features more talented local artists, photographers, and writers. Catch one of eighteen workshops, meet local artists and writers in person, plus meet with literary agents and book marketers. Workshop highlights include plein air, cedar weaving and gel print-making. Catch the awards ceremony of Sunshine Coast Writers and Editors Society Book Awards for BC Authors too.
