The upcoming long weekend from February 14 to 16 is jam-packed with excitement. It’s a perfect storm of February holidays converging into one weekend: Valentine’s Day, Lunar New Year and, of course, Family Day on Monday. With this trifecta of holidays, there’s so much happening around Metro Vancouver this long weekend. If you’re looking for kid-friendly and family-focused ways to stay busy this Family Day, here are nine activities in Metro Vancouver.

1. Richmond Children’s Arts Festival

The 17th annual Richmond Children’s Arts Festival returns to celebrate children’s creativity and imagination on Monday, February 16. The day-long festival will feature a range of free activities for kids aged two to 18. Watch interactive performances, music and dance shows, theatre and puppetry shows and storytelling sessions, or drop in to art workshops like Chinese calligraphy, finger-knit bracelets or make your own ceramic family portrait.

2. Music on Main’s BIG BANG Festival

The BIG BANG Festival is back for its second year, so kids can explore their sense of musical wonder. Featuring a diverse program of low and no-cost concerts, pop-up performances and music rooms, the festival includes artists like East Van’s Carnival Band, Tsatsu Stalqayu (Coastal Wolf Pack) and Vancouver Opera Orchestra percussionist Julia Chien. There are also workshops and fun activities like a scavenger hunt, temporary tattoos and face-painting. If all that music makes you hungry, there will be a selection of food trucks.

3. The Family Forward Festival on Granville Island

This inaugural festival from the Carousel Theatre for Young People celebrates family in all its forms. The weekend-long Family Forward Festival will feature drag performances, documentary screenings, dance parties (hello, baby rave!), live music and staged readings for kids of all ages.

4. Spring Festival at the Greater Vancouver Zoo


The Greater Vancouver Zoo is staying open late this weekend for its annual Spring Festival. Open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (and last entry at 7 p.m.), celebrate the Lunar New Year with daily lion dance performances, animal talks, red pocket surprises for kids, Hanfu try-ons, Chinese sugar painting and a cultural marketplace, alongside other animals at the zoo. Plus, there’s free general admission for everyone born in one of the Years of the Horse (1990, 2002, 2014, 2026, etc.), with a valid ID.

5. Family Day in Surrey

There is no shortage of activities to stay busy this Family Day weekend in Surrey. Have a ball at the all-ages Galentine’s disco ($15 tickets on February 13), skate for free from 1 to 8 p.m. (February 14-15) at Civic Plaza, visit the Family Day drop-in at Totest Aleng: Indigenous Learning House or head to one of the various community and recreation centres around town with free activities.

6. Caring in Nature in the Fraser Valley

This Family Day weekend, learn how humans, plants and animals care for one another in the Fraser Valley at Caring in Nature. In the morning, learn how humans support salmon migration at the salmon ladder activity, and in the afternoon, story time explores how trees nurture the plants and animals around them. There is also a variety of self-guided activities, like writing a love letter to your favourite plant, animal or human. Tickets include admission to the Fraser River Discovery Centre, and there’s free admission on February 16.

7. Winter Family Fun Day & Market in Maple Ridge

With indoor and outdoor activities, including games, crafts, interactive displays and music, Winter Family Fun Day & Market in Maple Ridge will have something for everyone. Hosted by the Maple Ridge Lions Club, this year’s annual event has a marketplace with over 35 vendors, as well as an umbrella parade. Kids under 12 can decorate an umbrella to show off for prizes.

8. Family Day at Fort Langley

Have a historic Family Day at Fort Langley with a special event all about food and family traditions. Watch live demonstrations, take a guided plant walk about Indigenous foods and medicinal plants, participate in a kid-friendly scavenger hunt and enjoy cranberry Bannock cooked over an open fire.

9. Family Day Weekend at Britannia Shipyards

Britannia Shipyards at Steveston Village is hosting free family-friendly activities for the Lunar New Year. At the Chinese Bunkhouse, kids can make their own Lunar New Year decorations and learn about animal zodiacs while exploring the historic house.
