A year in review: The hottest Vancouver actors of 2011

A year ago, I gave you the names of 11 people in the local acting community to keep an eye on in 2011.

I thought I would take a look back on that earlier prognostication and see just what exactly they accomplished within the past year.

Steve Bacic
Having previously appeared in a variety of episodic television such as Smallville and NCIS: Los Angeles, as well as starring in his own action series, The Guard, Steve Bacic completed three independent films, one feature film and landed guest starring roles in Endgame and the science fiction series, The Listener.

Warren Christie
Having guest-starred in several locally-shot series including Supernatural and The L Word, Warren Christie saw his career soar this past year, booking a lead role in the latest SyFy hit series, Alphas, which has just been picked up for a second season.

Christine Chatelain
In addition to filming three made-for-television movies, born and raised Vancouverite Christine Chatelain filmed a lead role in the documentary
series White Collar Poet.

Aliyah O’Brien
Aliyah O’Brien maintained her billing as ‘action queen’, landing roles in the sci-fi series Soldiers of Apocalypse as well as the Steven Seagal feature film, Maximum Conviction. In addition, the Victoria born actress enchants audiences as the stunning vampire Afina in Sanctuary.

Brett Dier
The multi-faceted Brett Dier joined the ranks of teen idol by landing the supporting lead role of Hutch Anderson in the locally-shot Nickelodeon/YTV hit series, Mr. Young.

Calum Worthy
21 year old Calum Worthy booked a lead role in one of Disney’s newest hit series, Austin and Ally. The Leo Award winner is hailed as one of Vancouver’s best actors.
 

MacKenzie Porter
As the sister of inaugural Canadian Idol winner Kalen Porter, MacKenzie Porter is carving out her niche in the country music spotlight. The talented actress and singer won the Nashville North competition at the Calgary Stampede; opening for Kenny Chesney; filmed two Made-for-TV movies; made a musical appearance in the feature film Gay Dude and has just booked the lead in Horses of McBride, which begins filming in Calgary later this month.
 

Reece Thompson
Following on the heels of a hectic 2010, Reece Thompson maintained a similar pace this past year, appearing in two independent feature films, Perks of Being a Wallflower and April Apocalypse.
 

Brenna O’Brien
Known for her voice work in addition to appearing in a number of roles in both film and television, Brenna O’Brien landed a supporting lead role in the latest Eva Mendes feature, Girl in Progress, which is due April 27, as well as a lead in the animated series, Iron Man.
 

Tiera Skovbye
Already sought after in the modeling world, Vancouver’s Tiera Skovbye had a busy 2011 and has high hopes for 2012 after being cast in a lead role in the pilot for a potential CBC series called Wish List.
 

Jodelle Ferland
Clearly one of the busiest working actors is Jodelle Ferland. This now 17 year old veteran – who began her craft at just two years of age – was cast in a lead voiceover role in Paranormal, in addition to appearing in the independent feature, Mighty Fine, alongside Chazz Palmaterri and Andie McDowell.
