Squamish’s popular Refresh market has some fresh ideas up its sleeve, so kids, parents, and parents-to-be should head to the special Refresh Kids market this weekend. Over 40 vendors will be selling locally designed clothing, accessories, toy, and gear in one of the biggest local indie craft markets for kids. While the parents shop, children can enjoy doing crafts, live music, a photo booth, dancing, a tea party and snow cones.
CBC Vancouver’s popular Toque Sessions only come around once a year, and in 2015 they’re giving audiences a chance for something special: The Super Toque. Catch three of Vancouver’s hottest rising musicians at this free event at the CBC Broadcast Centre. Catch indie-rockers Yukon Blonde and Little India, and electro-pop songstress Willa all on one stage this weekend. While the concert is free, you have to reserve your spot in advance. If they run out of space, a rush line will be formed in hopes of accommodating extra guests.
With all the sunshine we’re getting right now, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the North Shore Art Crawl. With over 400 artists and 78 locations, the Crawl gives people a chance to experience a variety of art forms in galleries and studios across North Vancouver. Check online for a list of participating artists and venues, and to find a schedule of live art demonstrations.
Need a little more adventure in your life? Get all the thrills you’re looking for at The Outdoor Adventure Show at the Vancouver Convention Centre. It’s “B.C.’s largest showcase of outdoor gear and adventure travel experiences,” and it has a line-up of speakers packed with talks on B.C. escapades from surfing to hiking. Aspiring photographers should be sure to check out their Photography Theatre to pick up tricks of the trade, and water sports fans can stop by their Whitewater Demo Pool for SUP and Kayaking demonstrations.
The timing has never been better to get out of town and pay a visit to Victoria. It’s Victoria Beer Week and there’s a variety of events for beer fans of every kind. Enjoy a beer and pizza tasting, a beer and book talk, or a beer label art show, as well as talks and networking events for home brewers. One of the most exciting events promises to be The Thunderdome, where 10 B.C. breweries will launch brand new beers.
Did we mention there will be beer?
If you’re searching for a spring break activity for the whole family, then the Burnaby Village Scavenger Hunt is the perfect outing. Explore the ’20s-style village with the help of a scavenger hunt clue sheet. It’s like a real life board game as guests complete activities, answer questions, enjoy live performers, play games and do crafts. Finish your scavenger hunt sheet to win the game and then treat yourself to dessert at the Ice Cream Parlour. You deserve it.
Need another spring break activity to add to your list? The Vancouver Art Gallery is hosting fun educational events for young and budding artists. Kids can explore the galleries and then try their hand at making some art of their own inspired by the exhibits in The Making Place. The programs are targeted towards kids ages 5-12, and kids 12 and under gain free entry.
If you’ve ever wanted to party like a Lannister, here’s your chance. Matt Grippo of San Fransisco’s Blackbird Bar will be taking over Bambudda for Winter is Coming, a Game of Thrones-themed cocktail party. Come dressed in your best Game of Thrones attire (we recommend a Dothraki getup) and sip on a Milk of Poppy, Mad King, or a Mother of Dragons. Reservations are recommended.
Valar Morghulis, so you might as well enjoy it while you’re here. We guarantee it’ll be more fun than The Red Wedding.
If you can’t make it to Victoria for their beer festival, you can still enjoy all your favourite brews right here in Vancouver. The East Side Beer Fest is raising money for the Vancouver Food Bank by pouring craft beers from around the world and serving up snacks. Head down to Wise Hall just off Commercial Drive and grab a drink. Tickets are just $25 and a non-perishable food donation.
