10 Pretty Picnic Spots to Enjoy in the Lower Mainland

There’s no doubt that beautiful B.C. is home to some of the finest views in the world—and warm days are the perfect opportunity to grab your picnic basket and take advantage of our parks and beaches. If you are in need of some destination inspo, we’ve gathered some of our favourite spots where you can enjoy sandwiches, bubbly and more.

1. David Lam Park – 1300 Pacific Boulevard, Vancouver

Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, David Lam Park is surrounded by beautiful views of both False Creek and Yaletown. There is more than enough space to set up a picnic on the large lawn, and alcohol is allowed here as part of the City of Vancouver’s pilot program. This vast park is also in close proximity to the basketball courts, tennis courts and playgrounds. Plus, we love that it is easily accessible by transit and the Aquabus—and don’t forget to bring your bike so you can hit the Seawall as well.

2. Buntzen Lake – 5000 Sunnyside Road, Anmore

If you are looking for the ultimate vacay vibes, then Buntzen Lake is your spot. This popular local destination not only has the most amazing water to swim and float in, but it also has wonderful nature trails, canoe rentals nearby, and designated areas for your furry friends. Grab one of the picnic tables to set up your spread, and keep the kids busy on the grassy play areas. *Note: all vehicles are required to book a parking pass before arrival

3. Garry Point Park – 12011 7th Avenue, Richmond

Close to the ever-popular Steveston Village, Richmond’s Garry Point Park offers incredible views of the Fraser River and Gulf Islands. There’s tons of green space, which makes it perfect for large groups to picnic and it’s also one of the best places to catch a romantic sunset if you’re spending time with a loved one. On any given day, you’ll see people strolling around, flying a kite, or just taking in the peaceful scenery.

4. Queen Elizabeth Park – 4600 Cambie Street, Vancouver

Enjoy lush greenery and beautiful flowers in Vancouver’s iconic Queen Elizabeth Park, which has the dreamiest views thanks to it being one of the highest points in the city. Sit back and enjoy your picnic, then make sure to stroll through the gardens, as well as play some tennis, or try your hand at lawn bowling. If you’re looking for a tropical escape, the park is even home to the Bloedel Conservatory, a “domed lush paradise” which features exotic birds and plants.

5. John Hendry Park (Trout Lake) – 100 Block East 19th Avenue, Vancouver

It’s the best of the both worlds at John Hendry Park, an easygoing, picturesque Vancouver destination. Picnic-goers can find a spot on the grass, relax, and take a stroll around Trout Lake, or even get active on the basketball courts, jogging trails, tennis courts, the playground and more. Trust us, the afternoon will just fly by.

6. White Rock Promenade – Marine Drive, White Rock

With endless scenic views and lots of attractions, this gem of a place is a vibrant spot to meet with friends or family for an afternoon picnic. Take advantage of the charming boutiques, grab some ice cream, and walk down the iconic pier to complete your day.

7. Stanley Park, Vancouver

You can never go wrong with picnic-ing at Stanley Park, one of Vancouver’s most famous attractions, and there are many reasons why. With scenic mountain views, beaches, trails, historical landmarks and the stunning Seawall, Stanley Park is filled with things to see and do for all ages. *Note: Reservations are required only for designated picnic sites.

8. Whytecliff Park – 7102 Marine Drive, West Vancouver

Situated close to Horseshoe Bay, this West Vancouver park has lots of space to enjoy a picnic on the grass or at a table. Whytecliff Park is well-known for hiking, strolling around on the rocky beach, and is also home to more than 200 marine animal species, so keep your eyes out for the wildlife. Not to mention, golden hour during low tide never fails to take our breath away.

9. Jericho Beach – 3941 Point Grey Road, Vancouver

Pretty views of the North Shore and (usually) smaller crowds make this relaxing, sandy beach ideal for a picnic, especially if it’s a family outing. Kids will love splashing around in the ocean, and there are also plenty of recreational activities to take part in at Jericho, including nature trails, biking, volleyball and more.

10. Centennial Beach – 570 Boundary Bay Road, Delta

This popular location does get crowded, especially on weekends, but it’s most definitely worth the experience if you can plan your visit in advance or on a weekday. The playground and amenities at Centennial Beach make it an excellent spot for families, and the picnic tables are great if you don’t want to set up your bites and refreshments on the sand. Plus, the water is great to take a dip in and you can walk quite far out when the tide is low.
