Walk among fields of gold or pick your own sunflowers this summer
Sunflower season is in full bloom. The tall, golden flowers are out in full display, soaking up the B.C. summer sun. Flower festivals are a great, family-friendly activity to spend the day outdoors at your own leisure, and possibly even take home some flowers or fruit at the end of the day. The few sunflower festivals that are happening around the Lower Mainland in 2025 will be well worth the drive for a floral weekend activity.
The Taves Family Farms’ Magic of Sunflowers kicks off on August 21 until September 12 (immediately followed by the Magic of Fall on September 13) in Abbotsford. Just over an hour drive from Vancouver, the Magic of Sunflowers promises to be a truly magical experience for the whole family, with six sunflower varieties and up to 50,000 blooms. Wander through the thousands of sunflowers in bloom. Get cuddly with the goats and bunnies before visiting the chickens, sheep, pigs and ducks at the nearby barnyard. Participate in the butterfly release on weekends for a memorable and intention-setting experience. Or, pick as many apples as your heart desires and fill a bag with the fresh U-pick fruit.
Kids should head to Farmville to check out the giant jumping pillow and pedal karts, hop on a hay ride or take on the treasure hunt challenge at Merlin’s Corn Maze. For adults, sample some hard cider at the Taves Estate Cidery tasting room. Weekday passes start at a discounted $22.70 while weekend and holiday passes start at $25.70 (opening weekend passes start at $27.70). Note, parking passes are extra (around $3).

Walk through acres of sunflowers at the Richmond Sunflower Festival in Richmond, featuring over 20 varieties of the flower. Open now until mid-September, catch the tractor wagon from the parking lot to the field and take a stroll through the scenic, stroller-friendly (and pet-friendly!) paths. Aside from the abundance of Insta-worthy photo-ops, the festival also has a rotating selection of food trucks for meals, snacks, sweet treats or refreshing drinks.
The Richmond Sunflower Festival has more than just the namesake variety—there are dahlias, gladiolas and other seasonal blooms too. Join the Thursday evening yoga session surrounded by dahlias before sampling a tasting flight at Country Vines Estate Winery next to the festival grounds. On weekdays, tickets for children (3-12 and seniors) start at $12 and $14 for general admission. On weekends, tickets for children and seniors start at $15, and general admission starts at $17 (children 2 and under are always free).
12 p.m.–7 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.–7 p.m. holidays and weekends 12900 Steveston Highway, Richmond, B.C. richmondsunflowerfestival.com

Looking for a more relaxed sunflower experience (with the promise of a sweet treat after)? Head to Emma Lea Farms for U-pick sunflower fields. At $2 a stem, pick your own bouquets from the blooming golden rows and take home to take home along with fresh fruit (we’re nearing the end of blueberry season here!). Shop the fresh fruit, local produce and products from the Farm Market or enjoy a treat (soft serve, sundaes, milkshakes—you name it) from the Ice Cream Shoppe after bundling your flowers. There’s also a picnic area for those wanting to make an afternoon out of visiting, picking and photographing the sunflowers.
U-pick open daily from 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (Farm Market & Ice Cream Shoppe open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily) 2727 Westham Island Road, Delta, B.C. emmaleafarms.com

Sunflowers can offer great pollination for bees. And that’s just what the intention was when planting the sunflowers at Campbell’s Gold Honey Farm & Meadery—to give the bees some late summer food. Though the sunflowers aren’t expected to bloom until mid-September, here’s your advance warning to plan a visit. This cozy country store and meadery is first and foremost a honey farm, selling all things honey (like beeswax candles and beekeeping supplies). Sip a mead trio on the patio before taking a slow walk over to the flowers for some photos. About an hour out from Vancouver, check out Campbell’s Gold on Instagram to stay up-to-date when the sunflowers bloom.
