Top 5 Books You’ll Want to Cozy up to This Fall
Article is open in Vancouver with a gorgeous new store you didn’t know you were craving
Fall has arrived, which means it’s time to leave the shorts and flip-flops behind and embrace autumn’s warm and cozy styles. We reached out to nine B.C. brands to find out their predictions and recommendations for this season’s top looks.
Duer is known for its performance denim that feels comfortable enough for hiking and biking but looks polished enough for a day in the office. Elizabeth Davey is the director of product for the Vancouver company.
Fall colours include pine, plum, and teak—great for adding warmth and depth to your wardrobe. As always, fall is a great season for dark rich washes in denim, but we are also seeing a big trend for broken-in stone washes. Our Galactic wash in our men’s line and Worn in Blue for women offer that casual lived-in look that customers can’t get enough of.
We’re seeing a resurgence of the classic straight fit in men’s pants. Straight fits range from slim to loose, with their signature feature being extra room around the ankle that allows the fabric to stack slightly on your shoe—in contrast to tapered fits that sit inside the tongue of your shoe. Straight fits suit a range of body types, making it easy to find the perfect one for you. Brand new for fall, Duer’s Performance Denim + Straight Pant and Stretch Canvas 7 Pocket Pant are quickly becoming customer favourites.
For women, flares are back, and we’re offering some great options. Our new Performance Denim High Rise Flare is slim through the knee, with a flared hem designed to flatter and elongate. We’ve included bar tacks so you can customize the hem length to your liking. Wear them with sneakers for a laid-back look, or dress them up with boots or heels for a more polished feel.
Opt for a classic pair of jeans like a straight cut or flare in a darker wash. It’s the ultimate versatile piece that will easily pair with anything, making this an instant must-have in your closet.
Utility wear is having a big fashion moment, and the iconic look for fall centres around our brand-new Stretch Canvas collection. We’ve spent years perfecting a more flexible canvas that’s designed for everyday wear. Our Stretch Canvas Utility Pant, available in women’s and men’s styles, is set to be your go-to-piece. Wear a simple tee or long-sleeve top, and layer it with an overshirt and sneakers. To change it up, trade out your shoes for a pair of boots.
Fall marks the shift back to cozy layers, and nothing complements a sweater better than a great pair of jeans. This season, we’re introducing our new Performance Flannel Button Down—offering the soft feel of a sweater, with advanced graphene technology for additional warmth without the weight.
Based in White Rock, Harly Jae uses all-natural fibres in neutral shades, allowing the feminine-looking, vintage-inspired garments to be endlessly mixed and matched. Founder Laïla B. Potvin designs her pieces to last for years, not just a season or two.
As a slow-fashion designer, I’m naturally drawn to styles that consistently make a return each fall. To me, the quintessential pieces that embody this timeless appeal are cozy knits. There’s nothing that captures the essence of fall quite like the nostalgia of an off-white sweater that seamlessly pairs with nearly everything in your wardrobe.
This year, I’m particularly excited about our Muse Sweater. It’s a piece I can’t wait to lounge in—it’s bold enough to make a statement, yet its classic design ensures it will remain a cherished favourite for many years to come.
I’m truly captivated by the resurgence of earthy plaids and utilitarian silhouettes, which perfectly harmonize with the changing leaves and natural backdrop. While I find inspiration in mainstream trends, I’m mindful of adapting them to what I already own, to maintain a sustainable approach. For instance, I’m enamoured with the barn jacket trend this season, but instead of investing in a new piece that might fade out of style by next year, I’m focussing on recreating the look with my Harly Jae Soller Jacket. It offers a similar vibe while allowing me to get creative with styling, making it a timeless and thoughtful choice.
Sustainable apparel brand Salt is based in two of the province’s most ocean-friendly spots: Salt Spring Island and Victoria. Owner Jessica Wilson is also the brand’s graphic and fashion designer, and her twin focus is on slow fashion and ocean conservation.
We feel deep blues and soft sandy creams are going to win for autumn this year, bringing out the elegant colours of a cool ocean against the shell-and-sand-covered shoreline.
Comfort is coming back. We all just want to look cute and be comfy. I think every woman is on board with this. So a lot of flannels, leggings, and wool shackets.
Be yourself. Being yourself is always on-trend!
Cozy wool sweaters and organic cotton thermals designed for the rugged West Coast, hot cups of coffee, watching the morning rain fall.
Homa Amani is the digital marketing specialist for Paper Label. The Vancouver company creates timeless clothing that is both versatile and comfortable, with seasonal releases intended to feel current but also to last for years.
Our take on trends dominating this season is a collection focussed on daywear, mix-and-match separates, and corporate staples, for the perfect everyday capsule wardrobe offering the wearer comfort and style. We leaned into relaxed preppy looks, including the perfect sweater set, and offered a mild barrel-leg silhouette to stand the test of time. For colours, we’ve opted for deep tones like Truffle and Midnight Blue, to pair with timeless fashion colours like Burnt Rust and Blue Daisy, to keep things fresh yet grounded.
What are we specifically excited about in the Paper Label HQ? Sweaters! As always. Who doesn’t want that sensation of being hugged? We have seen the Cardigan Club—which we have been a long-time member of—making a big comeback, and this season we’ve offered a timeless sweater set in a beautiful mohair mix. This set is an easy update to any wardrobe and will pass the closet-cleanout test for years.
Eva Lin is the founder of Hikesity, a new technical apparel brand in Vancouver that makes stylish, sustainable clothing that’s lightweight but also durable enough for Canada’s great outdoors.
This fall, earthy and nature-inspired tones like Angora Red, Moss Green, Chocolate, and Dusty Rose will take the spotlight. These shades feel grounded, subtle, and composed. Silhouettes will embrace that “power woman” energy—elegant and strong, with a touch of sensuality in the details.
We’re seeing a return to natural textures paired with minimalist shapes. “Geek chic” is making a quiet comeback, transitioning from menswear to women’s fashion, with a vintage intellectual vibe. It’s a blend of calm, nature-inspired looks and a more understated expression of ambition.
The best way to observe trends for me is, first, by looking at economic reports, lifestyle, and consumer trends to predict future fashion based on shifts in how people live. The major consumption trend among modern women is a preference for understated, high-quality pragmatism. Nostalgia is on the rise, and there’s a love for technology blended with nature. As a result, fashion choices are leaning away from bold, flashy, and overly sexy styles. Second, by checking the most-searched and highly liked content on social media, outside of clothing, you can gauge consumer preferences.
Vintage, oversized, with a distressed effect; mid-length trench coats paired with loose, soft bottoms—combining and contrasting strength with softness; and layering paired with pleated skirts, for a sophisticated intellectual look.
I’m excited that recent colour trends have leaned toward earthy and natural tones. Hikesity’s colour choices are specifically designed for the “superwoman” who plays multiple roles in life. These women have a strong inner core and are confident, independent, composed, and intelligent, with their own unique taste. That’s why our main colours are always black, white, and grey—these are, indeed, the top choices for “superwomen.” Building on these hues, nature-inspired tones are an extension of Hikesity’s design philosophy. The colours have a slight grey undertone, making them understated yet rich in depth and meaning. Although Hikesity is a practical brand that doesn’t chase trends, our philosophy and designs happen to align perfectly with this year’s trends.
Renée Power, founder of A Bronze Age in Vancouver, works alongside her aunts and cousins, handcrafting contemporary garments and accessories that are meant to last for years.
What is the best way to look on-trend this season?
Dress authentically. This is the idea that drives us at A Bronze Age. How can clothing bring out your inner self in a genuine way? Being on-trend can drive you into garments you wear for one season, for one trend, and never again. Here at the A Bronze Age office, none of us have the same style, so it is always a joy coming in on a new workday and seeing staff wearing garments in different ways that express who they are. This season is about being who you are—in the coziest and warmest way possible, of course.
What has you most excited about Fall/Winter 2024?
One thing I look forward to is layering. I always find myself designing garments with layering in mind. Layering pieces means you get multiple outfits all throughout the day, allowing you to experience multiple versions of yourself and style—plus, layering is a bonus for those pesky Vancouver weather changes!
Miriam Alden is the founder of Brunette the Label in Vancouver, which makes comfy but stylish loungewear with a focus on empowering women—“babes supporting babes.”
I am absolutely obsessed with deep burgundy with a hint of an almost brown tone. As always, I live for black (which is basically my uniform), but I am falling in love with saddle browns and olive greens for both knits and basics. As for silhouettes, I feel like the perfect trench is a key style for this season. I love the belt detail, as I am feeling a cinched-waist silhouette. I am also in my turtleneck era, and I think that’s a key elevated basic for fall. I love a leopard as a basic in unusual styles like a full sweatsuit.
The biker boot! I brought out my vintage Frye biker boots last fall, which I think was a bit early, but I just had this moment where I had to find them. I got them in my 20s and lived in them. It’s really fun to be re-wearing them now, with my style that is basically identical to then. I think the biker boot is going to be the boot of the season. The perfect tee, a biker or bomber jacket, denim, and a biker boot for fall.
I always say this, but it is important to wear what makes you feel the most yourself. I think having some key basics in your wardrobe really helps with daily dressing and feeling good, so a great basic white tee and a jacket of your own style. I am also currently loving varsity styling, whether it be outerwear or hats. Plus a perfect crewneck sweater, and jeans that make you feel good. I love vintage, and I think mixing some new pieces with some unique pieces helps make you feel and look on-trend, as it’s your own unique style.
Everything. I spend the entire year waiting for September to December 31st. I love the fall season and everything it is about: the fashion, the weather, the holiday season. Fall is so much easier for me to design than Spring/Summer. I am a “Fall,” as they say. I just find that the fall is all about new beginnings for me, which I love, and the fashion is just the best. We get to wear cozy layers, and we get to dress up a little more as we head into the holidays.
Vessi makes waterproof footwear that blends style and practicality. Cleverly crafted from a breathable knit material, the sneakers keep water out while also letting sweat escape. Kristina Mikhalkova is the Vancouver brand’s senior partnerships manager.
We’ve got a ton of great products but, as always, our Weekend Silhouette in Marble White as well as our newly released Courtside Classics in, really, all colours are dominating.
The classic courtside sneaker style is making a comeback this fall with the release of our Courtside Classic Sneaker.
Classic neutral sneakers with a pop of colour for your clothes.
That classic white sneaker will never go out of style.
We’re so excited for the new colours dropping in our collections.
Based near Vancouver’s Kits Beach, Kits sells its own eyeglasses and sunglasses alongside designer options by the likes of Ray-Ban, Armani, Versace, and Prada. Katie Dempsey is the company’s senior partnerships manager.
Our influencers and customers are loving our tortoise and Havana frames, especially the D Shape frames.
We’re seeing our community really loving brown, blue, cream patterns such as our Jordan LTD Lift-Off Frames.
We really use glasses to accessorize our outfits. Having a pair for each day of the week or every occasion keeps things exciting.
Textures and layering. Our multi-layer acetate frames are the perfect addition to any outfit, as well as our brand-new ribbed/texture collection featuring Gene, Ferris, Davis, and Grace.
Cozying up with a book and a cup of tea, and popping on my favourite Kits reading glasses! We also have some new drops that are hush-hush, but I think will be well received by our community.
