Nordstrom Canada's styling sales director reveals the items you're going to want in your wardrobe this season
Fall is my favourite season for so many reasons: autumn’s brilliant colours, a pumpkin latte and cozy nights curled up by the fireplace with a good book. However, what gets me even more excited is the fashion: boots, oversized sweaters, jeans and the newest trends.
BCLiving called on Lisa Tant, styling sales director at Nordstrom Canada, to share some of her best fall fashion tips, trends and top investment pieces every woman should have in her closet.
We are sure Tant will inspire you to shake up your style a little (or a lot) by embracing this season’s hottest colours, chicest prints, feminine menswear, tailored sportswear and eye-catching accessories
BCLiving: What are some of fall’s top trends?
Lisa Tant: When I suggest an outfit, I like to think of the customer’s lifestyle before a trend. Fashion truly is functional first and then choices reflect personal style. There’s something for everyone this season—how you style each piece makes it your own.
Menswear-inspired tailoring; athleisure (the mix of athletic influences with relaxed silhouettes); a casual western flavour; eye-popping bold brights in fun textures; and a soft romantic mood are all different trends to try. Whether you pair your outfits with sneakers and a backpack—or hiking boots and a tote—helps the look fit your daily activity.
BCL: What are five essential pieces that should be in every woman’s wardrobe this fall?
LT: A checked menswear-inspired blazer; a knee-length coat in a bold colour (why not try a plaid with a shot of brights?); a printed dress (long-sleeved and ankle-swishing); an oversized sweater; and wide-leg trousers.
BCL: If money is tight, what pieces should you splurge on?
LT: I suggest investing in pieces that can be styled multiple ways. For example: a tailored checked blazer in a quality material can be worn with jeans on the weekend; matching trousers or a pencil skirt to work; and a shimmery top, slim trousers and heels for a night out.
BCL: What are the most flattering jackets for different body types?
LT: Fit is everything. A classic blazer should fit well across the shoulders and cover the wrist.
BCL: What are the hottest colours for fall?
LT: Red, denim blue, marigold and orange worn together or grounded by black and neutrals. Invest in a great coloured jacket to revive all of your wardrobe basics.
BCL: What are some top shoe and boot styles and trends this fall?
LT: The cone-heeled Western calf-high boot; pointed-toe heels; stretchy fabric (bright hues) pointed-toe boots; slip-on mules; and chunky sneakers.
BCL: For the final touches, what are some of the top accessory trends this fall?
LT: Standouts to me include calf-high boots in white or silver; bold-hued tights; sparkly shoulder-duster earrings; layered necklaces and neckerchiefs; belt bags; and printed silk scarves to add a blast of colour and pattern.
