We’re in a glorious time in the fashion cycle when sneakers are available in a range of saturated colours and are not only acceptable – but très chic – especially when paired with outfits not remotely related to athletics. The classics are always a solid choice (hello, Stan Smith), but if you really want to make an impression with hard-core collectors, you’ll have to endure lineups, wait-lists or even a lottery (hello, Sneaker Box). It’s a rare moment when comfort and style conflate into a long-term trend, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Here are our top eight picks for sneakers that will update your outfit while keeping your feet happy this fall.



Adidas, Stan Smith, $110

Remember your first pair of Stan Smiths from high school? They’re back. And even if you’re immune to nostalgia, buy them for the fact that they go with everything. The smooth white leather with smart green accent looks refreshingly modern with shorts, dresses and jeans. And yes, definitely wear them past Labour Day.

This highly anticipated new release features a new colourway of black nubuck uppers with metallic silver details. Already in great demand, you’ll need to take your chances with a raffle just to win the opportunity to buy these beauties.

Native, Apollo Chukka, $100

Hometown fave, Native, has created a next-gen of its super comfy original EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) foam shoes. The Apollo Chukkas offer more structure with microfibre uppers, but still provide that signature spring-in-your-step feel.

New Balance, Tokyo Design Studio, $110

New Balance perennially releases sneakers that are contemporary, interesting and accessible. This edgy animal print is both neutral and eye-catching, but the most curious thing about it is its weight – in that it’s practically weightless. Made of a skeletally engineered upper that provides ultra-light support and fit, this runner is a treat for anyone tired of clunky, heavy shoes.

Joie, Kidmore Sneakers, $218

Joie’s streetwear staple gets a modern update in leather in this easy-to-wear neutral colour. The faux reptile print gives it subtle texture. You’ll be slipping these on throughout the fall.

People Footwear, The Phillips, $60

EVA is having a moment and newcomer, People Footwear, is the latest Vancouver company to provide “high-performance leisure” in the form of foam-y shoes. The Phillips is a stylish, chic sneaker that’s also ultra-light, cushy and perfect for running around town in. Reminiscent of the French, recently ubiquitous, Bensimon, these bear all the trademarks of becoming a West Coast classic.

Adidas x Raf Simons “Ozweego 2,” $515

For the more fashion-forward crowd, Raf Simons (Creative Director at Christian Dior) has released an all-red version of this popular Adidas sneaker. He’s released a new model each fall season for the past several years, so it’s safe to say that red will be a key colour this winter.
