Lighten up your look for summer with beauty tips and products fit for sunny days and steamy nights
Makeup is like fashion; it shifts with the seasons. And with hotter weather now in full swing, it’s time to ditch the dark eye shadows and burgundy lipsticks for a lighter, fresher palette.
Canada’s lead makeup artist for Maybelline New York, Grace Lee, shares her favourite products in a step-by-step guide to achieving the perfect summer look.
Start your summer look with clean skin. After washing your face, Lee recommends Maybelline New York’s Dream Fresh BB Cream as your moisturizer.
This product acts like a foundation, providing an 8-in-1 solution:
Lee says the result is a dewy, even complexion. But if you’re looking for a more matte finish, she suggests using Maybelline New York’s new Fit Me Shine-Free Foundation Stick.
Apply the stick down the T-zone and use your fingers to blend outward toward your ears. “The stick contains an anti-shine core that instantly absorbs oil, creating a natural matte complexion,” says Lee.
Summertime can mean late nights, so to hide any hint of darkness under those gorgeous eyes, Lee suggests Maybelline New York’s Dream Lumi Touch highlighting concealer in ‘Radiant.’
Now that you’ve created the perfect canvas, the next step is to create summer ready eyes. Lee says to begin with a small brush and highlight under the eyebrows and the inner corner of the eyes with Maybelline New York’s Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Shadow in ‘Barely Branded.’ This will create the illusion of a wide and open eye.
Add a shimmery hint of colour to your base by using a firmer brush to press Maybelline New York’s Color Tattoo Pure Pigments in ‘Breaking Bronze’ to your eyelid, remembering to blend. These long-wear loose powders come in a variety of explosive colours to help you keep up-to-date with colour trends.
Skip the harsh black eyeliner during warmer days and opt for Maybelline New York’s Eyestudio Master Smoky in ‘Smoky Chocolate.’ Lee says to apply the eyeliner on the top of the eye and “slightly blend with the sponge applicator so that the product blends into the pigment shadow.”
Complete the look with a finishing touch of mascara. Lee says to achieve that doll-eyed look, apply Maybelline New York Volum’ Express The Falsies Big Eyes Mascara to the top and bottom lashes. This mascara contains a dual ended brush. One brush is specifically designed to thicken and lengthen the top lashes, while the other brush coats even the tiniest of your bottom lashes.
Don’t rely on the sun to give you the colour you want (in fact, always wear sunscreen!) But you can brighten your complexion by adding some colour to your cheeks with Maybelline New York Dream Bouncy Blush in ‘Fresh Pink.’ Lee suggests using your fingers and placing the blush on the apples of your cheeks. This blush is great because it can be layered if you want more colour.
During the day, add a hint of colour to your lips by applying generous amounts of Maybelline New York Baby Lips Electro in ‘Pink Shock.’ This product is available Canada-wide come August, and combines the moisturizer of a lip balm with a hint of neon colour.
If you want something bolder, Lee says she goes for Maybelline New York Color Sensational in ‘Vivid Rose.’ These lipsticks are available in eight shades, and the colour stays true-to-the-tube, so the colour on the bullet is the same as what will appear on your lips. According to Lee, the best way to update your look is with a vivid lipstick.
One of Lee’s most basic beauty tips is to keep one focal point in the summer. If you’re going for dark and dramatic eyes, then opt for a lighter lip shade. If you want a vibrant red lip, then keep your eye palette more neutral.
For a fun lip effect, wear two shades of Maybelline New York’s Color Sensational lipsticks at once. Lee says to coat your lips in ‘On Fire Red’ and then dab ‘Vivid Rose’ in the centre of your lips.
