Reduce, reuse and recycle in the garden

Beyond composting, what can you do in the garden to recycle more? Here are some innovative suggestions on ways to practice the three Rs in your garden.

• Grow bedding plants from seed and you won’t have to recycle plant pots each spring.
• Start seedlings in reusable drink containers such as milk cartons and juice boxes.
• Pass on plastic plant pots to garden clubs that host annual fund raising plant sales.
• Layer newspaper over a turfed area and cover with layers of manure, compost and more leaves to create a new garden.
• Reuse disposable chopsticks as stakes for small plants and bulbs.
• Collect rainwater and reuse it to water during dry spells.
• Weed your lawn by hand and you won’t need to recycle the herbicide’s plastic packaging.
