Beyond composting, what can you do in the garden to recycle more? Here are some innovative suggestions on ways to practice the three Rs in your garden.
• Grow bedding plants from seed and you won’t have to recycle plant pots each spring. • Start seedlings in reusable drink containers such as milk cartons and juice boxes. • Pass on plastic plant pots to garden clubs that host annual fund raising plant sales. • Layer newspaper over a turfed area and cover with layers of manure, compost and more leaves to create a new garden. • Reuse disposable chopsticks as stakes for small plants and bulbs. • Collect rainwater and reuse it to water during dry spells. • Weed your lawn by hand and you won’t need to recycle the herbicide’s plastic packaging.
