An advocate of “ephemeral art,” Nicole Dextras created this living chair for the 2007 Vancouver Sun Garden Show at VanDusen. Magnolia leaves stapled together with hawthorn barbs cover the frame of an old sitting chair, while succulent-filled metal cones mimic the cushion. It took her two days to create this unique sculpture. “The things I do won’t last,” says Dextras. “They are more for contemplation or to just enjoy in the moment.” Her goal is to encourage creativity in gardeners and to help them to value transitional, natural beauty as much as permanent works of art.
