Maple Seeds in Triplets

Q: On Saturna Island I have a big leaf maple that is producing SOME seeds in triplets rather than pairs. I’m keeping samples in case this is of interest. I”ve never seen this until now. Do you know if it is especially unusual and if the seeds might be of interest to native plant enthusiasts?

As far as as I can recall, and according to several sources I have checked, the three key maple is an unusual condition (not noted). I think I have only ever seen it once.

As for keeping the seeds, I suspect it would not come true from seeds, but since you are on an island you might want to keep the form going as an unusual plant perhaps unique to Saturna. Maintaining local biological diversity is something that various groups consider important.
