Q: I have an evergreen magnolia that I hope will mature between our house and our neighbour’s. The only concern I have is that I don’t know if the root system is very invasive or not. Its not very far from our perimeter drainage. Can you help?
The system for ‘Bull Bay’ or evergreen magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) is usually not a problem for a drainage system. The main concern I would anticipate would be the eventually height and spread of the magnolia’s top growth, e.g. M. ‘Little Gem’ is considered a dwarf but can reach 6 to 8 m (20 to 25 ft.) tall and spread 3 to 5 m (10 to 15 ft.) wide when mature.
