Keep your eyes open for perennials that work well in containers and can multiply and go into your garden as well

This elegant footed planter box has just such ingredients. Ajuga reptans ‘Burgundy Glow’ has variegated grey-green-and-cream leaves with pink highlights, especially in the fall. Here it complements the coral bells at either end of the planter: Heuchera DOLCE ‘Blackcurrant’, which has delicious ruffled and marbled leaves. Clambering over its neighbours – but in such a delicate way! – is the short-lived perennial twinspur, Diascia FLYING COLORS ‘Trailing Antique Rose’.
