This distinct mid-century style home was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright
Canadian architect Ron Thom designed this home in 1957, drawing inspiration from American architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s work. Called the Carmichael House, this architectural marvel was recently revealed in a unique way: as the backdrop of Canadian fashion brand Reigning Champ’s newest campaign.
Address: 1160 Nepal Place, West Vancouver
Price: $3,698,000
Listing: West Coast Modern
The skinny: Two-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,843-square-foot home in Ambleside
The chic:
This home has a distinct layout that maximizes sight lines and the surrounding view. It was designed on a hexagonal grid, and explores shapes beyond the conventional right angles that you see in most homes. The shape of this home allows floor-to-ceiling windows to span the width of the building. The expansive windows let in an abundance of light and creates a feeling of openness.
The window panels fully slide open and lead directly to the outdoor terrace. The terrace is finished with wooden flooring and features a small pond fixture that ties in beautifully with the surrounding nature. It’s a great space to take in a breath of fresh air while admiring the sunset.
The emphasis on geometry extends beyond the exterior of the home. The interior is also largely geometric, from the polygonal kitchen island to the angled walls. The lack of right angles throughout the home seem to mimic nature’s fluidity, where elements rarely ever form a perfect angle.
Thom selected natural materials like wood and stone to further complement the surrounding nature. There’s teak-coloured wood panels across the ceiling and walls and exposed stone throughout the home; it’s a distinctive space that captures the essence of mid-century modernism beautifully.
Although this property is just one storey, it’s still very roomy. There are two bedrooms, an office space, a living and dining space, a separate family room and two full bathrooms. There is also a laundry and storage room, as well as a separate 125-square-foot storage unit.
