It’s time to put away the beach body and accompanying summer salad as autumn creeps up on the calendar. The sun is hitting the horizon earlier each day, so it’s a relief to know we can find a little extra warmth in the classic combination of a lunchtime soup and sandwich. Seven of Vancouver’s best bets are served at these local favourites.
The sandwiches at Finch’s Tea House are not your usual deli fare. In fact, they are not even referred to as sandwiches. These are “baguettes” – and works of art. The “Gypsy Salami” is chock full of its namesake meat, while a unique combination of fruit, brie, prosciutto and walnuts makes the “Pear” a delicious blend of savoury and sweet. A cup of soup – made daily in-house from organic stock – can be paired with any sandwich for just $3.95. As an added bonus, Finch’s will prep food and have it awaiting your arrival if orders are placed ahead by phone ahead of time.

Burgoo has frequently expanded throughout its thirteen-year history across the Lower Mainland – thanks in large part to its filling comfort-food menu. At all four locations, diners can pick up what chefs have deemed the “After School Special”: a combination of any cup of soup from their menu accompanied by the sandwich of your choice. The hearty crab bisque is a popular choice but the ridiculously indulgent grilled cheese – made with a combination of mozzarella, gruyère, emmental and cheddar – is the ultimate pairing for the more traditional tomato soup.

Soup and sandwich combos are certainly not exclusive to North American cuisine. Yaletown’s L’Antipasto folds in an Italian slant, offering your choice of panini and soup – accompanied by a pop or more traditional Americano – for just $12.50 daily. The traditional porchetta or fresh caprese with basil are at the top of the list.

Thierry Busset’s downtown café is primarily known for its handcrafted chocolates and all things sweet. Rightfully so. (One would struggle to find a better locale for a morning cappuccino and pastry.) But don’t discount this Alberni Street spot during the lunch hour. Just shy of $11 gets you a soup and half-sandwich combo, with selections ranging from the balsamic-mayo-laden roasted vegetable with provolone to the cold smoked wild sockeye salmon with cucumbers and cream cheese.

David Hawksworth certainly changed the Vancouver dining landscape when he opened his acclaimed restaurant at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia, and a recent expansion offering a charming, more casual extension to his respected brand has proven another successful add. Named for Hawksworth’s wife (Annabel), the popular lunch spot bustles throughout the day with tourists and locals alike. While Bel Café doesn’t offer a specific soup and sandwich combo on the menu, diners can’t go wrong when pairing the chicken Banh Mi sandwich with a cup of spicy coconut soup, all for around $16.

Hubbub lacks affectation. The look? Clean. The premise? Simple. The price? Affordable. And it goes without saying that the food is delicious. Diners are urged to “pick a protein” – ranging from the popular pulled pork to the more exotic white tiger prawn – and then tasked with choosing a side to complement the order. Skip the cookies and opt for one of the market soups, created fresh daily.
