One of Vancouver’s beloved summer events returns for its 49th year this August long weekend: the Powell Street Festival. One of the largest and longest-running community arts festivals in Canada, the Powell Street Festival celebrates Japanese Canadian culture and history. The festival will take place on August 2 and 3 in Oppenheimer Park, where guests can enjoy traditional taiko drumming, martial arts demonstrations and contemporary dance, music and visual arts, showcasing both traditional and modern Japanese Canadian talent. Attendees can also explore artisan markets, food vendors serving favourites like takoyaki, as well as interactive workshops for all ages.

Enjoy peak-season corn at the Chilliwack Corn Festival at Greendale Acres (a.k.a the Chilliwack Corn Maze). There will be plenty of corn-themed activities to participate in, like free corn shucking and corn eating competitions, as well as a corn hole tournament (online sign-up). Of course, a corn festival wouldn’t be complete without seasonal treats like corn flatbread pizza, corn salsa or corn dogs. There’s fun for the whole family too, with face painting offered from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. daily. With a whole lineup of live music performances, this year’s Chilliwack Corn Festival promises to be a weekend full of outdoor summer fun.
