9 Canadian Gifts for the Traveller on Your Holiday List

Plane tickets may not be in this year's holiday budget, but these travel-inspired gifts are a close second

Once somebody has the travel bug or wanderlust—or however we describe the desire to see the world—there really is no cure. This holiday season, give a travel-inspired gift to the traveller in your life to remind them of their favourite past vacations. Or, gift them something they can bring on their next big adventure. Either way, here are nine ideas from Canadian brands to surprise your favourite jet-setter or road tripper.

1. Candles from Laykhaus

Laykhaus is a Vancouver Island-based candle brand that loves Canada’s lakes so much, they created an entire collection named after their favourites. Sustainable and naturally fragranced, the Christmas Cracker gift set ($45) contains four small-sized candles to burn at one’s desk, bedside table, bath—anywhere a person wants to relax while remembering their time spent outdoors. The brand also offers custom candles from tourist hot spot partners like Sonora Resort, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Tourism Nanaimo and more.

2. Clothes from the Roots Roam Collection

The aptly travel-named Roam Collection by Roots may well be the sleekest, most stylish hoodie and pants to wear on a plane, train or automobile. The new super soft fabric finish is made with BreatheFit™ technology, offering liquid and stain resistance along with anti-odour properties. Plus, the clothes’ stretch bounces back, so when you arrive at your destination, you look fresh and pulled together. The pocketed high-waisted trouser-cut track pants ($118) are nice enough to tuck a dressy top into for a meeting or a lunch.

3. Slippers from Mave & Chez

There’s nothing like travelling with your own slippers to make any hotel room feel a little more like home away from home. Sometimes slippers can be unsupportive or far from chic, but recently, I’ve been smitten with Canadian women-owned brand Mave & Chez, especially the Maya Backless Mule style ($225) in silver. Available in different colours and materials, the Maya is great for narrow feet. But if your gift-getter has an average-width foot, go for the Audrey Classic Loafer style ($225). The owners of this brand are former competitive dancers with high standards, so these slippers support your arch, are podiatrist-approved and also have washable insoles.

4. Jewellery from Pilgrim

Pilgrim is a Danish-Canadian sustainable jewellery house that’s been around since 1983. Over 75 percent of the collection contains at least 75 percent recycled materials, and the brand offers most of its pieces in either silver or gold. Give the Nomad 2-in-1 Necklace ($69) to anyone on your list who fits that wanderer profile. The coin amulet and flat rope chain pair beautifully, and can be worn together or solo.

5. Sateen Sheet Set from Casper Canada

What is it about luxury hotel bedding? You climb in, the sheets are ridiculously soft, and you sleep like a baby. Can you repeat that experience at home? Absolutely. Treat your favourite hotel-goer to a set of Casper Canada Sateen Sheets ($199), and you might just gift them the best present ever: a good night’s sleep. The sheets have a 450 thread count and are 100 percent cotton. The fitted sheet is what sold me on this set—each corner has an elastic strap that pulls it nice and tight, keeping the surface smooth all night long.

6. Zzz Remedy from MORNINGS

The eco-conscious, Vancouver-based lifestyle brand MORNINGS gets it when it comes to jet lag. Give the Zzz Remedy ($40) to a friend or family member ahead of their post-holiday season travels. A few drops of herbal blend will help lull you off to sleep, thanks to the combination of organic lemon balm, hops and valerian. Take that, time zones!

7. Spa of the World Collection by The Body Shop

The Body Shop’s Spa of the World collection has been brought back by the now Canadian-owned, much-loved brand. I could shed happy tears to see it back on shelves. I’m currently obsessed with the whipped soufflé texture of the Japanese Camellia Body Cream ($49). Smooth on the body after a bath or shower, this cream is a spa-worthy treat with camellia seed oil and a soft scent that finds you (well, certainly me) opening the jar just for a calming whiff. Any globe-trotter will appreciate something from this line.

8. Jewellery Travel Case from Leah Yard Designs

For those who travel with their sparkly stuff, you’d be doing them a solid by gifting Vancouver-based Leah Yard Design’s Jewellery Travel Case ($80). This zippered linen box keeps the essential items organized, untangled and easy to access on the road or at home. With special spots for rings, necklaces and earrings, the case also features a removable bracelet pillow, which adds to the charm.

9. The Vacation in Provence Line from Savon Du Bois

This past summer, I checked off a bucket list trip to Provence, France. Today? I am insufferable. Ask my friends—I can’t get enough of Provençal-style anything to enjoy at home. So, when I discovered Canadian brand Savon Du Bois‘ Vacation in Provence collection, well, you can imagine the “oo-la-las” I uttered. The Vacation in Provence line is lovely. The blend of lavender, rosemary and rose takes me right back to the French countryside. The line includes room spray ($26), reed diffuser oil ($55), body polish ($45) and so much more.
