In this garden makeover, Judith Hogan looks at a problem property confronted with poor contouring and lack of any functional drainage. Before and after photos show the results.
The garden, which consisted only of an expansive lawn and some overgrown and poorly placed conifers, lacked interest. The small square patio was cracked and a dangerous step exiting the home was a liability. The first priority for Michael Bjorge of Pacifica Landscape Works was to develop an overall plan with the goal of transforming the space into a low-maintenance, functional and inviting environment. A dry-stacked basalt planter was placed across the back of the property. By elevating this planter, maintenance is easier and very little bending is required. Mortared Brome granite planters were wrapped around the concrete patio and planted with low cascading plant material to give a sense of enclosure, yet allow an unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape. A large landing area was added in place of the abrupt back step, with dramatic curved steps leading down to the patio.
