1. Hapa-palooza Festival – Friday, September 22 to Sunday, September 24

Celebrate mixed-roots culture at Hapa-palooza, a vibrant fusion of music, dance, literary, artistic and film performances that includes the opening Hip Hapa Hooray Gala on September 22; Hapa Family Day in the Park, a free, family-friendly community afternoon of music, dancing, balloon art and face-painting on September 23; and the Hapa-palooza Festival at WORD Vancouver, a free literary event on September 24.

2. Vancity Women’s Expo + Pop-Up – Friday, September 22 to Sunday, September 24

Gather a group of girlfriends and head to the Vancity Women’s Expo for free samples, makeovers and fashion shows, as well as cooking demos, food and wine sampling, career and business resources, decorating and travel ideas, health and wellness advice, and prizes from more than 200 vendors, plus a vintage and pop-up shop.

3. 4th Annual Etsy Made in Canada – Saturday, September 23 & Sunday, September 24

Meet local makers at Etsy’s biggest event yet at the Rocky Mountaineer Station, featuring more than 150 local vendors at the 4th Annual Etsy Made in Canada Market. The first 50 shoppers each day will receive special swag bags. Make a day of it with free parking, food trucks and free entry for children under the age of 12.

4. Nardwuar CiTR Radio Show 30 Year Anniversary with The Evaporators! – Saturday, September 23

Celebrate Canada’s most enthusiastic interviewer for the 30 year anniversary of Nardwuar the Human Serviette’s CiTR Radio Show (1987-2017) featuring The Evaporators, Owl Empire, plus Nardwuar’s video vault at this all-ages show.

5. Sake and Wine and Everything Fine – Monday, September 25

Royal Dinette collaborates with That’s Life for an evening of food, sake, wine and “everything fine.” For one special night, enjoy a six-course repast created by executive chef Alden Ong, and each course comes with not one, but two carefully selected pairings by wine director Claire Saskun and 2016 Sommelier of the Year, Roger Maniwa. Diners will also have the chance to meet and speak with sake brewers and winemakers.

6. A Night to Dream – Thursday, September 28

Join the Ronald McDonald House BC & Yukon for the 15th annual A Night to Dream Gala at the Fairmont Pacific Rim. The elegant evening will include dinner, dancing and a coveted live and silent auction in celebration of this amazing community that provides a home away from home for families coming to Vancouver in search of life-saving treatment for their children.

7. Interior Design Show Canada – Thursday, September 28 to Sunday, October 1

Now in its 13th year, IDS Vancouver brings together individual designers, artists, makers and design-centric brands to showcase their current works, concepts and products. Highlights include Intro/LA, a curated collection of contemporary brands; Open Studio, concepts based around the theme of ‘patterns’; and the bright tribal prints of the Walaland bar, designed by London-based designer Camille Walala.

8. Interrupting the Interface: New works by David Wilson – now until Saturday, September 30

Living in an era dominated by “fake news” and doctored images, Vancouver-based painter David Wilson’s most recent body of work examines the prolific use of the social media platform Instagram and how we as a society filter our existence. Inspired by a rainy Vancouver aesthetic, his city scenes from around the world explore the concept of filtering—adding and removing elements of the painting.

9. VIFF – Thursday, September 28 to Friday, October 13

Bringing the best of local and global productions to Vancouver, the International Film Festival features movies from 70 countries shown on nine screens. Highlights include a showing of Meditation Park, a bittersweet comedy starring Sandra Oh that was written, directed and produced by Vancouverite Mina Shum; Shut up and Say Something, a documentary about acclaimed spoken word artist Shane Koyczan; the Buffer Festival Program, which showcases some of the winning entries of this year’s YouTube content competition; and VIFF Live, with the legendary Kronos Quartet performing a live score to the Green Fog.

10. 13: The Musical – Thursday, September 28 to Sunday, October 1

Hilarious and heartwarming, 13: The Musical burst onto the stage in 2008 as the only Broadway show to ever have a cast made up entirely of teenagers. The story follows 12-year-old Evan Goldman, a big city kid stuck in a small town, who is trying to plan the world’s best bar mitzvah while trying to navigate the minefield of teenage life. Bring On Tomorrow Co.’s production assembles rising professional talent from the stage and screen, not to mention a full live band lead by Grammy-nominated musician Michael Creber.
