1. The MAMA Project – Thursday, May 11, to Saturday, June 3

Endorsed by the National Committee of UN Women Canada, the MAMA Project is a travelling art installation created by artist Emily van Lidth de Jeude that explores relationships with mothers. Images have been painted on raw bed linens and hung like laundry around the space, and broadcast audio recordings of interviews with mothers accompany the installation. SuperMAMA is a multimedia performance of songs and poetry about motherhood and being mothered.

2. Spot Prawn Festival – Saturday, May 13

Spot Prawn season is starting! Head to the 11th annual festival of this favourite sweet crustacean for the prawn boil, cooking demos and the chance to buy this local delicacy live off the fishing boats on Granville Island.
11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Fisherman’s Wharf, tickets: $19.75 for three spot prawns, sides and drink samples

 

3. Chilliwack Art of Wine – Saturday, May 13

Support the local arts and sip on fine wines at the fourth Chilliwack Art of Wine Festival. Tasty appies and live entertainment will accompany the B.C. wine-tasting, and all proceeds go to funding The Chilliwack Arts & Cultural Centre Society’s programming.

4. Vancouver Arts Lip Sync Battle III – Saturday, May 13

Tara Cheyenne Performance’s Lip Sync Battle pits members of the Vancouver arts community against each other for a night of lyrical fun. The evening includes a silent auction, entertainment and popcorn!

5. Groundwerk 2 Year – Saturday, May 13 & Sunday, May 14

Join in the day and nighttime celebration of two years of Groundwerk, Vancouver’s group of local electronic music enthusiasts who gather to share knowledge, create mentorships and foster new connections. Seminars, panel discussions and kit demos round out the weekend of music.

6. Dance Fitness Expo – Saturday, May 13 & Sunday, May 14

More than 700 dancers will come together for a weekend of dance-inspired fun with 12 master classesin dance fitness styles such as Zumba and Bolly Xtaught by popular instructors from across the Lower Mainland. Saturday night brings everyone together for a big dance party to show off their moves.

7. Cross Country Coffee Swap – Sunday, May 14

Canadian caffeine lovers unite for the first collaborative Cross Country Coffee Swap. Attendees will taste four local roasters from B.C. beside four from Ontario. The event aims to “create curious coffee tasters and build a strong Canadian community of coffee.”

8. MOM = WOW – Sunday, May 14

Make Mom laugh this Mother’s Day at an afternoon improv show with audience-driven mom-inspired scenes performed by the Vancouver TheatreSports League. The show starts at 4 p.m., so you can fit in brunch or dinner too, and tickets include a Kir Royale, a glass of wine or a soft drink.

9. Expressions Theatre Festival 2017 – Thursday, May 18 to Saturday, May 27

Arts Umbrella Theatre & Music presents five diverse and distinctive productions by gifted young artists, ages 13 to 19 in the Junior, Senior and Musical Theatre Troupes, as well as an exciting new work by the Laboratory Theatre Troupe. From the sharp satire of Urinetown: The Musical to the playful compilation The Complete Works of William Shakespeare: (abridged), this year’s program offers an array of diverse and thought-provoking works, including the emotionally resonant, world premiere of Living In My Skin, and the beloved family classic Charlotte’s Web.

10. Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair – Friday, May 19 to Monday, May 22

Saddle up for this stampede-style family show, complete with rodeos, West Coast lumberjack shows, freestyle skateboarding competitions, pig races and a kids zone.
