This week in BC: Ring in the New Year with a four-course meal at Vancouver's Hawksworth Restaurant, a vintage party at the Pourhouse, a kid-friendly day on the mountain, and more
Family camping trips are fun, but tent-pitching, rainy weather and curious bears are not. You won’t have to worry about any of that at Vancouver Aquarium‘s Winter Wonderland Family Sleepover on December 29, when the whole clan can cozy up for an exciting night of behind-the-scenes tours, a thrilling film in the 4-D theatre and, best of all a unique opportunity to sleep beside beluga whales. Tickets also include a bedtime snack and continental breakfast, for $93 per person.
Want to ring in the New Year on a high point? You can do just that — literally and figuratively — at Grouse Mountain’s New Year’s Eve Gala, where revelers will say so long to 2012 from 3,700 feet above sea level. You’ll begin with a free gondola ride to the peak before sitting down to a multi-course dinner followed by DJ-led dancing, party favours and a glass of bubbly. Tickets start from $70 per person for the 5:30 p.m. seating and $100 for the 8:30 p.m. seating.
Getting another year older isn’t always a laughing matter. But when the clock ticks into 2013, you’ll find plenty to laugh about at The Comedy Mix (1015 Burrard St, Vancouver), site of a New Year’s Eve show featuring TVW columnist (and star stand-up) Patrick Maliha (shown left), along with emcee Charlie Demers and comics Kyle Bottom and Chris James. Tickets are available online for $40 per person or, for $85, you can also enjoy a buffet dinner and Champagne toast at midnight.
“We’re Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time).” If you’re a Trooper fan, that’s reason enough to usher in 2013 with the Juno-winning rockers on December 31 at Boulevard Casino’s Red Robinson Show Theatre. It’s all part of Bro Jake’s New Year’s Eve Bash, helmed by none other than Jake Edwards, Rock 101’s award-winning radio personality. So buy yourself a ticket and get ready to (sorry!) “Raise a Little Hell.” Ticekts for the 11p.m show are available online.
One size doesn’t fit all, especially when it comes to ringing in the New Year. That’s the thinning behind the Fairmont Pacific Rim‘s Pick Your Party offer. Choose a sophisticated winemaker’s dinner with reps from Burrowing Owl, or a lavish celebration in the Lobby Lounge, complete with dinner and live performances. You’ll also enjoy accommodation in a deluxe room, your choice of dinner, free parking and late checkout, from $699 per night. To book, call 604-695-5332.
Who said you can’t turn back time? Pourhouse Restaurant (162 Water St, Vancouver) is doing just that by hosting a Turn of the Century party on New Year’s Eve that includes a live jazz band, mouthwatering eats and a free class of bubbly at midnight. What to wear? Make it vintage and make ti good, ’cause there’s a prize for best costume. Dinner seatings take place between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., so book your spot by calling 604-568-7022.
Even if our family is usually fast asleep by midnight, that’s not reason to forego New Year’s Eve festivities. Just check out Mount Seymour’s Family First Night for oodles of all-ages entertainment, including tubing, tobogganing, roving, performers, fireworks, kid-friendly snack and an early countdown at 9 p.m. so little ones can enjoy all the horn-blwoing hoopla at Enquist Lodge in Snowplay Park on December 31, starting at 5 p.m. Tickets range from $10 per person and up.
Find the cure for what ails you at Medicine, a new play by Fringe Festival favourite TJ Dawe, from January 3 to 13 at Vancouver’s Firehall Art Centre. This acclaimed solo show shares the playwright’s real-life experience of joining a doctor-led retreat in which participants ingested a mind-bending plant to confront their demons. Sound strange? Let retreat leader Dr. Gabor Mate give you all the deets at free post-show Talkback sessions on January 3 to 5, 11 and 12. Buy tickets online or by phone at 604-689-0926.
You don’t have to be a glutton to agree that there are few better ways to start the New Year than on a full stomach. That’s especially true when the good in question is a four-course gourmet menu specially prepared by Vancouver’s Hawksworth Restaurant. Showcasing the best of contemporary Canadian cuisine, dishes include yellowfin tuna, butter-poached lobster and a choice of Fraser Valley pheasant or bacon-wrapped venison loin, starting from 98$ per person.
