What to do in BC this week

Spend a Day at the Farm – September 8
Here’s your opportunity to connect with real farms, farmers and food. The 7th Annual Day at the Farm takes place on September 8 at Westham Island Herb Farm in Delta. Learn about the importance of agriculture and the non-market environmental services it provides, and enjoy live music, auctions, food trucks, farm tours and loads more. This event has family fun written all over it.

Celebrate the West End – September 8
Formerly known as Davie Day, the West End Fest is now bigger and better. There will be more opportunities to interact with local businesses, to enjoy live entertainment on two stages, and to celebrate the people, culture and history of the West End. Other activities include a dodge ball tournament, heritage walking tours and a roller disco to name a few. Don’t miss out.

Get a Taste of the Cowichan Wine and Culinary Festival – September 8-16
The 8th Annual Cowichan Wine & Culinary Festival kicks off on September 8 with a Grape Stomp at the Cowichan Exhibition. This promises to be a very funny but messy event so be sure to sign up – and pack a towel. The week continues with special events such as winemaker’s dinners, a Crab Feastival and other restaurant specials. ‘Savour’ at the Barn in Birdseye Cove on September 13 includes 10 wineries pouring and pairing with the culinary treats of The Barn’s resident chef Ashley Lee.

Catch a Latin American Flick – until September 9
Since 2003, VLAFF has provided audiences with the unique opportunity to experience Latin American cinema in Vancouver and explores historical and social issues through the eyes of filmmakers at the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival. And with only 2 days left, you’d best hurry over to one of the many venues in downtown Vancouver showing the final 15 films.

Walk for a Pet-friendly Cause – September 9
Join a PAWSome affair this Sunday and help raise funds for our furry friends. A province-wide event since 2004, thousands of animal-lovers will be gathering to walk in support of their local SPCA branches. Meet a shelter animal, mingle with other animal lovers and enjoy a day of fun celebrating our four-legged friends.

Glam up for the Glitter ‘n’ Green Bloom Gala 2012 – September 13
Bring your sequins out to play at the VanDusen Visitor Centre for the annual Bloom Gala to raise funds for Education in the Garden. Guests will feast on food from Edible Canada and sip on VQA from Prospect Winery, enjoy a live auction and live music all set against the beautiful background of Livingstone Lake.

Chow Down at the Fraser Valley Food Show – September 14-16
Celebrating over 155 years of bountiful Fraser Valley harvests and food processing, the Fraser Valley Food Show will host celebrity chef demonstrations, cooking competitions, sausage-making competitions, and cheese and wine seminars. And in case you were wondering, beer, wine and spirits will be well represented in the Tasting Pavilion where visitors can relax and get a taste of a wide selection of beverages. And don’t forget your wallet: there will be over 100 exhibit booths so you can stock up on locally grown and produced specialty food items.
