5 Fun Family Activities in Surrey, Delta and White Rock

Beat those winter blues with fun for the whole family this spring

It’s that time of year on the West Coast. As we trudge through the first few months, with their grey days and wet weather, we can’t help but look forward to summer vacations, where fun and frivolity replace the forced and familiar. For B.C. families, however, a little escape is easily found right now, right in our own backyard!

Here, we present five of our favourite ways to beat back the winter blahs in Surrey, Delta and White Rock…

1. Stories in White Rock

White Rock is world-renowned for its beautiful coastal stretches and stunning views everywhere you look, but what’s sometimes overlooked is the charming history of the area and the vibrant arts scene it’s produced.

You can take in both at the White Rock Museum & Archives, where current exhibits take you back in time to explore early May Day costumes, as well as delve into stories of the Semiahmoo First Nation to learn about some of White Rock’s most iconic landmarks.

2. Comb the beach

For eight glorious kilometres, White Rock Beach stretches out beside the protected waters of Semiahmoo Bay. Rocks to overturn and shallow tide pools make this sandy expanse a thrill to explore any time of year. See how many forms of seaside wildlife you can spot, from the coastal birds above to the crabs scurrying at your feet. Bring a picnic if the weather’s fine, or warm up at the nearby Wooden Spoon Co., where the kids’ menu is just as enticing as the play area.

3. Surrey indoors

On the inevitable downpour days, head into Surrey to one the city’s exciting indoor play spaces. At the We Play Kids Gym, kids can climb, swing and slide through 2000 square feet of monkey bars, playhouses, a ball pit and more, before they settle into the “We Create” room to exercise their artistic side. For the more adventurous sort, check out Project Climbing in Cloverdale for some free-form bouldering for mountaineers of all levels and abilities.

4. Park it at a playground

Not to be outdone, Surrey’s outdoor spaces are also amazing to play around in on those days when the weather is a touch more co-operative. From wide-open urban wilderness to delightful community parks, there’s plenty of ways to go green in Surrey. 5. Delta on two wheels

One of the best ways to get around Delta is on a bicycle thanks to its many nature trails and dedicated bike routes. Explore the labyrinth of the Delta Watershed or pedal past Boundary Bay, home to 225 different species of birds.
