30 Rock has not been shy about mocking their network, NBC, since the series began. But on Thursday’s (Jan. 19) episode, the show decided to hit much closer to home when they went after cast member Tracy Morgan.

In the episode, Tracy Jordan (Morgan) incites a protest after making insensitive jokes about gays during a comedy club date. If this sounds familiar, it’s because that’s pretty much what happened to Morgan in June 2011 following a stand-up routine in Nashville, TN. It was then that Morgan said if his son were gay, he would “pull out a knife and stab” him.

On the episode, Jordan apologizes to Glad (the plastic bag maker) rather than GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. This forces Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) to apologize for him. She says, “He’s not capable of hate. He’s just an idiot who doesn’t know what he’s saying.”

This is not quite what Fey said when the real controversy happened. At that time she issued a statement saying, “I hope for his sake that Tracy’s apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian co-workers at 30 Rock.”

During the actual controversy, Morgan apologized for what he called his “choice of words,” adding that his comments were “not funny in any context.”
