The Jersey Shore is coming to an end, but the show that's brought us plenty of laughs (and head shaking moments) hopes to entertain one more time
Snooki and the rest of the gang are saying goodbye to The Jersey Shore
I’m no fan of Jersey Shore, but there’s no denying the kind of impact it’s had on pop culture since its debut back in 2009.
Not only did the show introduce such terms as “GTL,” “slop tart” and “grenades” into the lexicon, Jersey Shore also made stars of its cast, especially Snooki and The Situation (a.k.a. Nicole Polizzi and Mike Sorrentino).
Although the show took a lot of heat for its glorification of stupidity and drunkenness, Jersey Shore clearly connected with MTV’s young demographic, immediately becoming the channel’s No. 1 show.
And now it’s about to end; even though Jersey Shore remains one of its most-watched shows, MTV officially announced plans to cancel the show after the sixth season, which kicks off this week.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, MTV’s executive vice-president of programming Chris Linn noted that the decision to end Jersey Shore had nothing to do with ratings.
“The show still dominates, it’s the No. 1 show in our core demo, it’s still incredibly successful,” he said. “It’s really about their lives evolving and changing in a way that moves them away from the original conceit of the show. As successful as the show is, we don’t want to be in a situation where we’re milking every ratings point out of a franchise until the end. Our audience demands reinvention and is always looking for what’s new. As tempting as it is to squeeze something to the end, we made what we think is the right, tough choice to end the show on top.”
Although the party will soon be over at Seaside Heights, don’t think for a second that things are going to get all melancholy and weepy. In a clip promoting the season premiere, Snooki and JWoww (a.k.a. Jennifer Farley) outfit themselves head to toe in plastic wrap and attempt to disinfect the infamous “Smush Room.”
If that isn’t a fitting way to say goodbye to Jersey Shore, I don’t know what is.
The final season of The Jersey Shore premieres Thursday, October 4th at 7 pm on MTV Canada.
