Would you watch a spin-off show of The Office starring Dwight?
You could be seeing more adventures with Dwight Schrute soon
For the second time in the show’s history, the powers that be at The Office are considering a spinoff.
The out-of-nowhere news about a new spinoff broke late Wednesday, with Deadline reporting that NBC, showrunner Paul Lieberstein and star Rainn Wilson talking about a new show that would focus on Dwight Schrute. The idea has Dwight leaving Dunder Mifflin and devoting himself to Schrute Farm and the bed & breakfast he runs on the property.
The spinoff would be more of a family show, with multiple generations of previously mentioned but never-seen Schrutes populating the show. The idea sounds a little like Newhart, but with Larry, Darryl and Darryl related to the main character.
NBC previously considered a spinoff of The Office in the 2007-08 season, but executive producers Greg Daniels and Mike Schur eventually developed Parks and Recreation instead.
The timeline for the potential spinoff would have the concept introduced later this season, but if it’s picked up the Dwight-centric show likely wouldn’t debut until early 2013, Deadline says.
We understand the business impulse behind a possible spinoff — “The Office” is one of the few shows on NBC at the moment that still pulls decent ratings, but it’s aging, and the contracts of several cast members are up at the end of this season.
Creatively, we’re a little less sure. Dwight is not the most sympathetic character, and we worry that a show centered on him would force the writers to soften some of his rougher edges (although given what we do know about the Schrute family, he may already be the most well-adjusted of the lot).
Also — what about Mose? Schur has played Dwight’s cousin throughout the run of “The Office,” but he’s got a full-time job running “Parks and Rec” and likely wouldn’t commit to being on camera that often. A Schrute family show without Mose doesn’t seem right to us.
What do you think of the idea, though? Would you watch a Dwight-centric “Office” spinoff?
