What to Watch This Week: April 8 to 13

From a comedian signing off to a music legend rocking out, we round up our top 10 shows to watch this week

1. Our Cartoon President – Sunday, April 8, 7 p.m., TMN1 | Season Finale

The highly animated resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue wraps up his first season this week, as the Donald throws out the first pitch at a Washington Nationals game, while his daughter, eager to become a feminist icon, decides to open a school for girls.

2. Kingpin – Sunday, April 8, 9 p.m. & Midnight, History | Series Premiere

Fans of dramas about organized crime will find plenty to enjoy in this new documentary series that tells the true-life stories of some of the world’s most notorious crime kingpins. The debut episode looks at the criminal career of Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger, currently serving two consecutive life sentences for a dizzying list of crimes, including racketeering, money laundering, extortion and 19 murders. You may think you already know this unbelievable story (Johnny Depp portrayed Bulger in the film Black Mass, while Jack Nicholson played a character based on the real deal in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed), yet Kingpin presents additional detail that proves truth really is stranger than fiction.

Future episodes ?will tackle the exploits of other infamous kingpins, including Colombian cocaine magnate Pablo Escobar and Gambino crime family boss John Gotti.

3. New Girl – Tuesday, April 10, 7:30 p.m., City & 9:30 p.m., Fox, Comedy | Season Premiere

Seven years ago, an adorkable girl named Jess (Zooey Deschanel) moved in with three single? guys in a California loft. Much hilarity ensued. This spring, these friends are taking a bow, but not before some epic adventures involving a toddler, a marriage and a time jump.

New Girl picks up three years after we left off, with new stay-at-home dad Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone), now a successful modelling agent, in the throes of parenting. Winston’s (Lamorne Morris) engagement to Aly (guest star Nasim Pedrad) has evolved into conjugal bliss, but his seminal relationship this season is with his estranged father, played by Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s J.B. Smoove. Nick (Jake Johnson) has continued his career as a writer of young adult novels, and Jess has been supporting that career, while taking a break from her job as a principal because of an event that’s… still shrouded in mystery. All seems well, until a death shakes things up. “It’s heartbreaking for all of us,” teases Simone.

4. Rick Mercer Report – Tuesday, April 10, 8 p.m., CBC | Series Finale

Rick Mercer doesn’t know what he’s going to do with himself after this Tuesday. The same can be said for the rest of Canada. ?The award-winning host turns off the lights on Rick Mercer Report this week. After coming to our national attention in the early ’90s on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, the political satirist launched his namesake series in 2004. It became a ranting travelogue/love letter to a country that was ready for a bit more edge. But all good things must come to an end. After 15 years of travelling the country non-stop, he looks forward to finally being able to accept a few lunch invitations. (“I’ve spent 15 years saying, ‘No, sorry. I can’t,’” he explains.)

But that’s not to say the future unknown isn’t causing a few sleepless nights for the 48-year-old. He says it’s anxiety mixed with excitement. “I have big plans, I just don’t know what they are yet,” he adds. “I’m going to miss the nature of the show and the stuff I do.”

5. Elton John: I’m Still Standing – A Grammy Salute – Tuesday, April 10, 9 p.m., City & CBS

It’s a celebration befitting a true pop-music icon, as the Grammys put on a two-hour concert featuring some of the biggest names in the biz. Tune in as Lady Gaga, John Legend, Kesha, Miley Cyrus and Elton John himself hit the stage to perform songs from his impressive, influential catalogue.

6. Andre the Giant – Tuesday, April 10, 9 p.m. & 1 a.m., HBO Canada

Andre the Giant was larger than life in every sense. According to his billing, the French behemoth stood seven-foot-four (he was actually closer to six-foot-11) and weighed 500 pounds, and was known to enjoy prodigious amounts of food and alcohol. For fun, he would move his friends’ cars—using his bare hands—to different parking spaces as a practical joke.

Stories about Andre abound, such as the one in which he drank 127 beers in one sitting and passed out in a hotel lobby; because of his massive size, staff were unable to move him, so they simply laid a piano cover atop him while he slept.

A new HBO documentary sets out to separate the truth from the legends, with exec producer Bill Simmons (host of HBO’s now-cancelled Every Given Wednesday) teaming up with director Jason Hehir for Andre the Giant, which chronicles the life of André René Roussimoff from his upbringing in France to his wrestling career to his forays into the entertainment world, such as his unforgettable role in The Princess Bride.

Andre the Giant also includes interviews with wrestlers Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair, as well as the recollections of Billy Crystal and Rob Reiner (who worked with him on The Princess Bride), Arnold Schwarzenegger and WWE CEO Vince McMahon.

7. The Expanse – Wednesday, April 11, 6 p.m. & 11 p.m., Space | Season Premiere

The future of the galaxy is on the line when this Game of Thrones-meets-Battlestar Galactica series returns for a third season. Earth, Mars and The Belt are at war, and as hostilities increase, so too does the pressing need to unlock the mysteries of the rampaging protomolecule that could very well destroy all human life.

8. The Americans – Wednesday, April 11, 7 p.m., 8:05 p.m. & 10 p.m., FX Canada

The final season of this critically adored spy drama continues upping the tension. After a disastrous operation, Philip and Elizabeth are again at odds over how to handle things with their daughter, while Stan tries to manage the risk of Sofia and Gennadi’s disintegrating relationship.

9. Harry Potter: A History of Magic – Wednesday, April 11, 8 p.m., The CW

Produced in conjunction with the London exhibit of the same name, this 90-minute special celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first Harry Potter book by taking an inside look at the real-life magical history behind J.K. Rowling’s beloved classics. With footage from the British Library’s exhibition and exclusive access to a priceless collection of artifacts, viewers will be taken on a tour of the mesmerizing journey behind this global phenomenon.

10. In Principle – Friday, April 13, 7:30 p.m., KCTS | Series Premiere

While PBS isn’t generally recognized_as a bastion of conservatism, this right-leaning new political talk show featuring columnist Michael Gerson and commentator Amy Holmes is taking its cue from William F. Buckley’s Firing Line, examining the week’s news from a conservative vantage point.
