Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga Reunite One Last Time

Tony Bennett enjoys a poignant finale, alongside one of his biggest fans—and one of pop’s biggest stars

A few weeks back, 60 Minutes ran a moving profile on legendary crooner Tony Bennett. At the age of 95, Bennett is in the throes of Alzheimer’s, yet remains in great voice and able to still do justice to his beloved jazz standards, miraculously remembering the lyrics to his iconic songs while his grasp on everything else has become tenuous.

For his final act, Bennett is once again teaming up with Lady Gaga, as the duo releases a new album and a trio of TV specials to draw the curtain on his career, one of which debuts on CBS this week.

The hour-long show features footage from two sold-out concerts the pair performed at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall in August, billed as Bennett’s final public performances, with the first night taking place on his 95th birthday.

Having been fortunate enough to see Gaga and Bennett together in concert several years ago, I can attest that the affection the two share is both genuine and infectious, resulting in harmonic splendour and—in the case of Gaga, at least—multiple costume changes throughout the performance. The show begins with Gaga singing an array of solo standards, including “Luck Be a Lady” and “New York, New York,” followed by Bennett crooning some of his best-loved favourites, such as “Steppin’ Out,” “Fly Me to the Moon” and, of course, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” The special culminates with the two blending their voices for a trio of duets: “Lady Is a Tramp,” “Love for Sale” and “Anything Goes.”

In addition, the pair will be featured in a special edition of MTV Unplugged, and will be the focus of an upcoming Paramount+ documentary, The Lady and the Legend, with air dates for both yet to be announced.
