Another slate of promising TV series launch in the season ahead
Following our previous picks for 11 shows you can’t miss as the seasons change, we’ve culled another group of promising reboots, reality competitions, superhero adventures and more.
Here are a few more of our top selections this fall…
STARRING: Brad Dourif, Jennifer Tilly, Alex Vincent, Christine Elise
Based on the Child’s Play movies, this darkly comedic horror thriller furthers the exploits of homicidal doll Chucky (once again voiced by Dourif). Here, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos after Chucky turns up at a suburban yard sale. Soon, everyone must grapple with a spree of terrifying murders that begin to expose the town’s deep hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, friends and foes from Chucky’s past creep back into his world and threaten to expose the truth behind his mysterious origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.
PREMIERES: Tuesday, October 19th on Showcase
STARRING: Sam Neill, Shamier Anderson, Golshifteh Farahani, Shioli Kutsuna, Firas Nassar, Noah Bean
Longtime X-Men producer Simon Kinberg co-creates this gritty sci-fi adventure, which tracks an alien invasion through the eyes of several protagonists on several continents. Our heroes include a small-town U.S. sheriff (Neill), a Syrian immigrant (Farahani) and her family in Long Island; a member of the Japanese space agency (Kutsuna); and an elite soldier (rising Canadian star Anderson) deployed in Afghanistan.
PREMIERES: Friday, October 22nd on Apple TV+
STARRING: Voices of Lizzy Caplan, Christian Slater, Andy Daly, John DiMaggio, Clark Duke, Bobby Lee, Brett Gelman, Tisha Campbell
Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch leaves Disney behind for an edgier brand of cartoon humour. It centres on Reagan (Caplan), tech expert for the deep state shadow government behind all those crazy Internet conspiracy theories—which, it turns out, aren’t just theories. Despite coming off as antisocial, Reagan is a dreamer who truly thinks she can make the world better; alas, her co-workers—including a psychic mushroom (Gelman) from the Hollow Earth, a dolphin man (DiMaggio) and her own unhinged, manifesto-writing father (Slater) — don’t make it easy.
PREMIERES: Friday, October 22nd on Netflix
STARRING: TBA
In a more uplifting sort of reality show than the network behind Big Brother is usually known for, six activists compete in various challenges to try and raise awareness for their respective causes. Mentored along the way by prominent public figures, their end goal is to reach the G20 Summit in Italy, where they’ll have a chance to connect with world leaders, secure funding and, perhaps, effect meaningful change on a global scale.
PREMIERES: Friday, October 22nd on CBS
STARRING: Colin Kaepernick, Jaden Michael, Mary-Louise Parker, Nick Offerman
After the Emmy-winning success of When They See Us, filmmaker Ava DuVernay returns to Netflix for another miniseries, exploring the teen years of NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick (Michael), growing up as a biracial kid with two adopted parents (Parker, Offerman) in a mostly white community. We’ll learn how this upbringing shaped the worldview of a man who, years later, would take a stand against racial injustice by taking a knee during the national anthem. Kaepernick himself serves as our narrator.
PREMIERES: Friday, October 29th on Netflix
STARRING: Michael C. Hall, Julia Jones, Clancy Brown, John Lithgow, Jennifer Carpenter
When last we saw serial- killer-with-a-code Dexter Morgan (Hall), he had faked his own death and taken on a new identity. 10 years later, Dex is now living under an assumed name in a small town in Upstate New York, working at a hunting supply shop and dating the local sheriff (Jones). Life is boring and bucolic, just the way he wants it, until a mysterious figure arrives in town threatening to expose the secrets of his murderous past.
PREMIERES: Sunday, November 7th on Crave (Stream)
STARRING: Lucy Hale, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Ali Cook, Thalissa Teixeria
Based on the novel by Daniel Cole, this U.K. import stars Pretty Little Liars and Katy Keene alum Hale as a young detective who’s just joined the London Metropolitan Police, only to be assigned the most bone-chilling case imaginable: six victims who were murdered, dismembered and stitched back together as a grotesque ragdoll. As the investigation trudges along with no breaks and no suspects in sight, the demented killer starts sending messages to the cops, taking great pleasure in reminding them they haven’t got a clue.
PREMIERES: Thursday, November 11th on AMC
STARRING: Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds
Three of Hollywood’s biggest box-office draws team up for this Netflix action movie, with Johnson playing a veteran Interpol profiler who faces off against the world’s top art thief (Gadot) and the planet’s greatest con artist (Reynolds).
PREMIERES: Friday, November 12th on Netflix
STARRING: Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Kathryn Hahn, Casey Wilson, Sarayu Blue
Inspired by true events, this streaming series details the bizarre bond between psychiatrist to the stars Dr. Isaac Ike Herschkopf (Rudd) and his longtime patient Martin Marty Markowitz (Ferrell). Over the course of their time together, the charmingly manipulative Ike slowly inserts himself into Marty’s life, even moving into his patient’s Hamptons home and persuading Marty to name him president of the family business. The show explores how a seemingly normal doctor-patient dynamic morphs into an exploitative relationship filled with manipulation, power grabs and dysfunction at its finest.
PREMIERES: Friday, November 12th on Apple TV+
STARRING: Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, Archie Yates, Aisling Bea, Kenan Thompson, Pete Holmes, Ally Maki, Chris Parnell
This update of the beloved Macaulay Culkin movies follows youngster Max Mercer (Yates), who is accidentally left alone for the holidays when his parents forget to bring him on a family vacation, leaving the kid to foil a pair of thieves out to steal a priceless heirloom from his home.
PREMIERES: Friday, November 12th on Disney+
STARRING: Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld, Vera Farmiga, Florence Pugh, Alaqua Cox, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James
Following WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and What If…?, the next entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s TV expansion will see one of the original Avengers—Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye—coming to Disney+ for his very own limited series. As with most Marvel projects, plot details are scant. But we do know it’ll involve Clint (Renner) crossing paths with one of his biggest fans, a wisecracking young woman named Kate Bishop (True Grit’s Steinfeld), whom he trains in the ways of the bow-and-arrow—perhaps eventually even passing the mantle of Hawkeye on to her. Meanwhile, as teased during the closing moments of the Black Widow flick, former Russian super-assassin Yelena Belova (Pugh) blames Clint for the death of her big sis Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) in Avengers: Endgame—and vengeance will be hers.
PREMIERES: Wednesday, November 24th on Disney+
