Although the male flowers of Helwingia japonica are small and not showy, they are still quite special: the flowers emerge from the leaf instead of the stem. This is a rare phenomenon called epiphylly. Research suggests the condition occurs in genera of only a few plant families, almost all of which are tropical. In female plants, the black fruit jarringly decorates the leaf surface.
