Vancouver Adventures: Our Picks for January 21-27

1. Brunch Crawl Gastown – Saturday, January 21

Part of Dine Out Vancouver, and presented by Vancouver Foodster, Brunch Crawl Gastown is one of six neighbourhood brunch crawls that give participants a passport to taste treats from pancakes and pizza to smoothies or seafood on the menus of restaurants taking part. In addition to Gastown, there will also be brunch crawls in Kitsilano, Granville Island, East Village, Yaletown, Robson/West End and Commercial Drive.

2. 21st Century Flea Market – Sunday, January 22

B.C.’s largest collectors’ market returns with over 175 vendor tables selling vintage jewellery, retro furnishings, quirky artwork and antiques. Gale Pirie, an accredited member of the Canadian Personal Property Appraisers Group, will be on hand to offer appraisals of your antiques ($10 per item, or three for $25, cash only).

3. Greasy Spoon Diner Experience – Monday, January 23

Chef Mark Singson, known for his FAM Inc (Food Art Music) pop-up dinner series, will be creating his take on classic diner food at the Save on Meats Diner. All funds raised for A Better Life Foundation go towards food security and upward mobility for people who need a hand up.
5:30 p.m. or 8 p.m, $95 + tax

4. Street Food City – Monday, January 23 to Sunday, January 29

Catch 20 of the city’s tastiest food trucks at the sixth annual Street Food City. Part of Dine Out Vancouver Festival, the pod brings together a taste of Vancouver—from pies and poutine to salads and Slavic food. Entry is free and special Dine Out menus and pricing will be on offer.

5. Robert Burns’ Night at The Cascade Room – Wednesday, January 25

Celebrate the life and poetry of Scottish poet Robert Burns with a delicious Scottish-inspired evening featuring bagpipes, live Celtic music, whisky, haggis, and other treats (including deep fried Mars bars as part of the three-course dinner!). Local bagpiper Matt Dolan will ‘pipe in the haggis’ with Dougie Stewart from Colourstrings Conservatory of Music addressing the haggis before the feasting begins.

6. Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise – Thursday, January 26

Celebrate Black History Month with this biography of an amazing writer and performer as part of DOXA’s Motion Pictures Film Series. Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack’s Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise follows the tragedies and triumphs in the life of America’s acclaimed activist.

7. LunarFest – Friday, January 27 to Sunday, January 29

Chinese New Year comes to Queen Elizabeth Plaza to celebrate the Year of the Rooster with Rooster Winter Games, lunar crafts, fortune-telling and a kids’ fest. LunarFest—a Winter Olympics Legacy event that began in 2009—celebrates Asian arts and culture throughout the weekend.

8. PuSh Festival – Now until Sunday, February 5

Vancouver’s premiere boundary-pushing performing arts festival returns with an eclectic range of theatre, music, dance and multimedia performances by local and international artists. Events range from a Human Library (‘borrow’ someone for 20 minutes to hear their story) to Australian Aboriginal music and a comedic look at Tourette syndrome.

9. Flight of the Dragon – Now until Sunday, February 26

Follow the flight of a magical dragon and soar over China’s most amazing scenery at a special Chinese New Year edition of FlyOver. Admission includes the regular FlyOver Canada Experience as well.

10. Innovation Festival: Vancouver – Now until Friday, February 3

Join in the nationwide celebration of science as part of Canada’s 150th birthday and check out the community events happening across the city. Science World will be showing QUANTUM: The Exhibition, the first-ever travelling show on quantum information science and technology.
